The entrepreneur and owner of Designer Classics Carpet, is deciding upon future growth opportunities for his company. Opportunities for forward and background integration have been identified. As well, the acquisition of a firm manufacturing a related product line is being considered. He must decide upon priorities, direction and timing of all these moves.

<ul><li>To assess a company's strategy and a set of strategic initiatives in relation to that strategy.</li><li>To examine the issue of balance: horizontal and vertical.</li><li>To set priorities, pace and sequence for the strategic initiatives.</li><li>To appreciate the strengths of an entrepreneur (i.e., opportunity-seeking) but also the risks this entails of pushing the organization beyond its ability to cope with the opportunities identified.</li></ul>This case, because it is relatively short, easy to understand, yet comprehensive, makes an excellent introduction to a policy/strategy course. It can also be used as a transition case between the environment component of a course and the resources/capabilities section. The case also makes a good final exam for a one-term policy course.
