  • Operations Management Challenges at Heathrow Airport (Part A)

Airports are complex environments, with decision-making processes divided among numerous authorities, and many stakeholders pursuing their own interests. Based on Normand Boivin's tenure as chief operating officer (COO) of Heathrow Airport between 2011 and 2018, the case addresses various capacity-related issues ranging from customer satisfaction to solutions studied and implemented. Heathrow is Europe's busiest international airport and one of the major hubs of the civil aviation world. Yet Heathrow faces the same challenges as all other major airports in industrialized countries. When Boivin was appointed COO in 2011, the airport's competitive position had been heavily damaged by a reputation for poor customer service. When he stepped down, seven years later, Heathrow found itself once again in an enviable competitive position. The case reviews the steps taken by Boivin to resolve many of the problems it had faced.

  • Bollore Logistics Canada and the Use of Incoterms in International Maritime Shipping - 2023 Update

Bollore Logistics Canada is an international freight forwarder based in Saint-Laurent, Quebec and part of the transportation and logistics division of the Bollore Group, a French multinational headed by the Bollore family. Freight forwarders provide their clients with transport solutions by coordinating the modes of transportation used, customs clearance and documentation, port handling, and supervision of all shipping aspects. This case features Marc Gagnon, a new recruit in the sea freight export department of Bollore Logistics Canada, who has to respond to calls from three clients. The three have asked about different shipments and transactions (transport of mining equipment to New Caledonia, pharmaceutical products to Chile, and circus show materials to Greece). Each client request involves international maritime shipping calling for the choice of a specific Incoterm (version 2020, as defined by the International Chamber of Commerce) and the corresponding estimate. For each of the three situations, the characteristics of the buyer and seller are described, along with their respective business objectives, their relationship, the merchandise and the destination. The three cases are presented in increasing order of difficulty.

  • The Implementation of Flowcasting between CPGA and Sam's Club

This case study discusses the challenges of implementing Flowcasting. It starts by summarizing the innovations made in supply chain management over the past fifteen years. It also describes the multi-level replenishment cycle as it existed in 2006 between CPGA and Sam's Club. The first section of the case study aims to stimulate thoughts about the disadvantages of the system in use at the time. Then, the case moves on to the implementation of Flowcasting, a breakthrough approach to supply chain management. Flowcasting is unique in two ways: 1) it is the first decision support system targeting three levels of the supply chain (retailer, the retailer's distribution centre, and the manufacturer's distribution centre), and 2) it involves the exchange of data between two separate sources (or companies), or a type of co-managed inventory.
