Women@Work: Fang (A)
This series of six short two-part cases ("caselets") is written to highlight workplace dynamics faced by women professionals. Women represent about half of the global workforce but they face distinct workplace issues compared to men. We will examine some of these issues through these caselets, which are written from the personal perspectives of the protagonists. They are real-life stories that many should be able to relate to. Although all the protagonists are women, this does not mean that the lessons are not applicable to men. Men and women work alongside one another at the workplace and men play a critical role in shaping women's workplace experience. Throughout the case discussions, the perspectives of men will be immensely valuable. We recognise that the instructor cannot possibly do justice to these cases in a 90-minutes class. It is also not our goal to solve the larger social and gender issues that are implicated in these cases. Our aim is primarily to help students better appreciate the challenges women face, and collectively think of ways to handle them. -

Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty: Digital innovation of Cross-functional Smart Evolution Unit XSE
In mid-2019, the chief regions and markets officer of the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS) insurance company was wondering how to grow the company’s innovation culture, and how to manage resistance from other areas of the business. AGCS was part of Allianz SE, a European multinational financial services company whose core businesses were insurance and asset management. Recent changes in the global landscape had been driven by technological advancements, and market leaders would need to consider using new methods and innovation. AGCS had set up a new corporate incubator to accelerate digital innovation. However, the digital innovation incubator's journey was not without challenges and learning curve issues, especially during its initial stages. Within 18 months, the new corporate incubator was fully entrenched within AGCS. The next steps involved finding the right key stakeholders and strategic thrust to help it thrive. -

Mary Guerrero and the Advancement of Latinx Talent: Developing an Employee Resource Group at a Top Tier Bank (A)
Mary Guerrero was a first-generation Latina and an investment banking analyst at a top tier bank on Wall Street-Bulge Bracket Bank (BBB). She was committed to increasing representation of Latinx talent at her firm. She was already doing a lot of individual work to make this happen (e.g. reviewing candidate resumes at 2am after she had finished her assigned work). She wanted to scale her efforts and debated whether she should build a broader coalition to move the needle on Latinx talent representation despite having a demanding full-time workload. -
Mary Guerrero and the Advancement of Latinx Talent: Developing an Employee Resource Group at a Top Tier Bank (B)
Mary Guerrero decided to pursue the challenging road and kicked off Hispanic/Latinx Advancement and Career Engagement (HACE) at her Bulge Bracket Bank (BBB). For Mary, her larger purpose was to advance Latinx talent in the U.S. because she believed it was important for leadership at major U.S. firms to mirror the composition of the country. With Latinx representing almost 18.3% of the U.S. population but only holding 3.8% of board seats, she saw a problem that needed to be addressed. She understood what getting a job at a prestigious Bulge Bracket Bank on Wall Street meant for a Latinx. It meant not only learning hard skills like financial modeling but also earning credibility. Mary's life journey from growing up in a low-income neighborhood to earning a coveted spot on Wall Street was difficult and she wanted to make that path easier for others. -
PVR Limited: CSR, Being Inclusive, Spreading Smiles
PVR Limited (PVR), the largest premium film exhibition company in India, with more than 750 screens, launched its Accessible Cinema Program in December 2018. Supported by its top management, PVR developed a culture of social responsibility that went beyond compliance. The program aimed to make PVR’s cinemas accessible to people with disabilities and focused especially on providing content for people with hearing impairment, and visual impairment. PVR rolled out the program to 50 cinemas in the first phase, and the response from patrons was encouraging. However, rolling out the program to the entire chain would involve redesigning existing cinemas to make them accessible and would be operationally and financially challenging. Additionally, the success of the program was dependent upon the willingness of film producers to provide content suitable for visually- and hearing-impaired audiences. Although laws mandated the production of suitable content for people with disabilities, these laws were not consistently enforced. Making movie producers provide suitable content was not going to be easy. In 2019, now that the first phase of the accessibility program was launched, how could the company meet these continuing challenges going forward? -

Students are asked to step into the role of the faculty leader, who has formulated a general framework to do so, and must fill the framework with as many potential ideas regarding the impact as possible. -
Airbnb: Home Sharing in China
In 2015, Airbnb, Inc. began to explore entry into the Chinese market. In August of that year, it announced a partnership with two of its China-based investors to help it navigate the expansion. By January 2016, the company was facing a number of fundamental questions. First, how should it best position itself in China to ensure a successful expansion? Should it work with a local competitor and, if so, who? If it chose to instead continue expanding alone, should it replicate its established global formula or should it localize? If it pursued a localization strategy, what were the different ways it could localize its operations? And which of these should it prioritize? -
