• Kia Motors: Positioning and Growth Strategies in India

Kia Motors India (Kia) had tasted success in India within a year of the launch of its product Seltos. Kia’s managing director and chief executive officer was quite happy with the sales figures for Seltos, the mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV) launched in August 2019, and was fairly confident that Kia’s compact SUV Sonet would follow the same path. Kia’s positioning strategies had worked very well thus far, and the company had been able to cultivate a brand image of a premium automaker whose products were considered aspirational.

However, Kia’s competitors seemed to have learned from Kia’s success in realizing what worked for Indian consumers and were starting to launch new variants of existing models. In the face of this competitive onslaught and slowing economic growth in India, the chief executive officer had to formulate strategies that would keep Kia’s growth trajectory on track. Could his understanding of the dynamics of the SUV segment in India enable him to frame effective positioning and growth strategies that would continue to work for Kia?

  • Coke Puts Its Brand between a Rock and a Hard Place: Aligning Activism with Brand Purpose

This case presents The Coca-Cola Company's (Coke's) involvement in the controversial Georgia voting bills. It can be used to explore brand purpose and activation of purpose through activism. Presenting a chronology of Coke's statements as the firm responded to consumer and organizational actions, the case enables students to explore the challenges associated with the following: 1) aligning activism with brand purpose, 2) engaging in activism in a way that strengthens the consumer-brand relationship, and 3) aligning activism efforts with business growth. Consequently, the case offers opportunities to dive deeply into brand activism, brand purpose design, and brand activation, as well as corporate response to consumer activism. The case includes proprietary information about Coke's purpose, beliefs, and values that can provide the basis for a compelling discussion. This case is well suited for undergraduate, MBA, MBA for executives (EMBA), and Executive Education programs. For undergraduate students, it can be placed in a course in brand management, capstone marketing strategy, management/leadership communication, or management strategy, introducing the concept of aligning brand actions with brand purpose. For MBA/EMBA students, it can be placed in a first-year core marketing course, management communication course, management strategy course, or brand management elective. In Executive Education programs, the case can help firm leaders proactively think about how to engage in controversial issues that divide consumers, shareholders, and employees. Coke appears to be caught flat-footed, reacting rather than leading from a clear point of view. This case enables executives to think about how they might manage such a situation before it arises.

  • Martha Stewart Cannabis: Overcoming Obstacles

In 2020, the legal cannabis industry in the United States was emerging. One large player in the nascent industry was Canopy Growth Corporation (Canopy Growth), a cannabinoid company based in Smiths Falls, Ontario, that grew cannabis and managed a range of cannabis-related brands. In September 2020, Canopy Growth announced a partnership with Martha Stewart that entailed the development of a mix of cannabis edibles and oils for wellness sold under the name Martha Stewart CBD. Although the legal cannabis industry held tremendous promise, there were a wide range of unique challenges associated with selling cannabis products, including regulatory and policy issues, stigmas associated with illegal cannabis, and other more typical issues associated with selling new products such as the need for consumer education. • Champo Carpets: Improving Business-to-Business Sales Using Machine Learning Algorithms

Champo Carpets is one of the largest carpet manufacturing companies based in India, with customers across the world, including some of the most reputed stores and catalog companies. Champo Carpets is based out of Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, which is one of the most famous clusters of carpet weaving in India. This cluster is spread over 1,000 sq. km and comprises many villages and districts in and around it. The company is a vertically integrated manufacturer and exporter of carpets and floor coverings, with more than 52 years of existence. At the beginning of 2020, the company employed 1,500 people with a capacity to produce 200,000 pieces of carpets and floor coverings per month. As part of sales and marketing, Champo Carpets shared sample designs with its potential customers, based on which the customer placed an order. The sample design selection was done in various ways and the process itself is costly and elaborate. To capture industry trends, a team of the company visited various trade shows and events and sent samples to the client as per the latest fiber and color trends. However, their sample-to-order conversion ratio was low compared to the industry average. This had cost repercussions as well as lost opportunities. The company identified the cause as inaccurate targeting of products to their customers. It subsequently implemented an enterprise resource planning (ERP) application and has been capturing data at every point of production as well as sales. They believe this accumulated data can help target their products accurately to the right clients and design an appropriate recommender system.

With no vaccine in sight for the public until at least January 2021, Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer of British Columbia (BC), had to steer the Canadian province through the COVID-19 pandemic. Had Dr. Henry overlooked the implications that factors such as ethnicity, language, and race had for the fight against COVID-19? Public health messaging destined for racialized and diverse communities was inherently complex, and social media had already erupted with posts from many frustrated members of visible minority communities. Dr. Henry wondered what communications strategy, if any, should be urgently set in motion to help curb the increase in COVID-19 cases. Who should the communications strategy target? What message should be delivered and through what channels? The lives of BC residents were in Dr. Henry's hands.

  • Yummy: Delivering Value to Venezuela

By June 2021, Yummy had become Venezuela's first and largest food delivery app and last-mile logistics company. In Caracas, the nation's capital, Yummy held a 55% market share, while operations in other cities had already started to take place, including in three of the country's most populous ones. But this did not come without challenges - it had been a hectic year since the operations were launched in April 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out - with the direst one being the difficult task of raising money to start and grow a business in Venezuela, a country that ranked among the worst globally for doing business. However, the startup has just gained admission to an American seed money startup accelerator, allowing Yummy to attract institutional investors and to explore potential growth avenues. With a board meeting approaching, the company's CEO, Vicente Zavarce, reflected with co-founders on the possibilities that lay ahead. Should Yummy keep expanding geographically to other cities in Venezuela or even branch out into other countries, either in Latin America or worldwide? Should the company instead grow by expanding to new verticals, leveraging its customer base by offering additional services such as ride-sharing or financial services? And what would be the right sequence for these activities if Yummy's new vision was to become a super app?
