  • Delisle Industries

In 2011, the sole owner and chief executive officer of Delisle Industries received Delisle’s 2010 financial statements from the company’s auditors and compared the results with previous years. While she was very happy with Delisle’s rapid growth, she had a number of serious concerns about its future. In particular, she was concerned about operating problems that had arisen as a result of rapid expansion as well as Delisle’s dependence on one vendor, Eagle Wholesale Club, to distribute Delisle’s product. She also had concerns about the establishment of a new production facility, wondered what could be done about the company’s poor cash management and overreliance on debt financing, and was seeking opportunities to finance future growth.

  • Data Analytics at DBS Group Audit: The Future of Auditing is Auditing the Future

The case is set in January 2014 and reveals the data analytics initiatives at DBS Group Audit. Group Audit was used to assess the riskiness of the bank's branches based on seven attributes derived from the auditors' collective wisdom. The results could sometimes be misleading and inaccurate. To revamp this process, a machine-learning predictive modelling technique was introduced, and successfully correlated more than 130 risk-related attributes. In February 2014, DBS Group Audit and A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) reached an agreement to set up a joint lab, leveraging the research institute's capabilities in developing innovative products and services. The outputs of data analytics are displayed in three forms. First, the heat map reveals the risk level of all branches in Singapore from a birds-eye perspective. Second, complaint analysis helps to identify customer needs more accurately, reducing the level of complaint. Third, cash discrepancy and headcount issues are reflected on the outcome page as a sudden jump in the graph. With these techniques, the auditors were expected to save man-hours and process the auditing work more effectively and efficiently by being responsive to changing risk profiles on a timely basis. The application of data analytics on risk profiling practices at DBS Group Audit is an anchor point for the bank's vision of being predictive in risks. The bank is motivated to bring this data analytics initiative to other areas as well.

  • Blackstone at Age 30

Since its IPO in 2007 and following the global financial crisis, Blackstone largely outpaced its alternative investment firm peers in assets under management, new business launches, profitability, and market capitalization. Under the leadership of Stephen A. Schwarzman, chairman and CEO, and president and COO Hamilton ("Tony") James, Blackstone's growth derived from substantial horizontal expansion into new alternative asset products and services, both organically and through acquisition. These included businesses in private equity, real estate, funds of hedge funds, alternative credit, opportunistic transactions ("Tactical Opportunities"), and secondaries investments. The firm has also innovated in sourcing capital from a variety of limited partners. Blackstone's culture of centralized investment processes and risk management coupled with entrepreneurial leadership contributed to its growth in important ways, but the firm faces important external and internal challenges as it seeks to continue its growth.

  • Finance Reading: Time Value of Money

Given an interest rate, readers will learn to calculate the present value of a sum to be received in the future or, alternatively, the future value of a sum invested today. The reading covers compounding and discounting, the two types of calculations used to determine the future and present value of money. It concludes with more complicated calculations drawn from real-world examples, and a brief discussion of how the formulas in the reading relate to pre-programmed Excel functions. The reading includes eight interactive illustrations: "Time Value of $100 Cash" shows the value of $100 compounded or discounted over 1-, 2-, and 3-year periods; "Calculating the Present Value of Multiple Cash Flows" is an animated presentation of present value calculations involving multiple (equal) cash flows and multiple periods; "Present or Future Value of Multiple Cash Flows" covers multiple (equal) cash flows and multiple periods, and allows readers to choose whether to compute present values or future values and observe the results; "Time Value of $100 with Compounding Frequencies" allows the reader to observe the impact of varying the interest rate and compounding frequency on the present or future value of $100; "Effect of Compounding Frequency" visually illustrates the economic impact of compounding frequency on future value; "Mortgage as an Annuity" is a mortgage calculator which allows the reader to set the APR and mortgage term and see how each affects the monthly payment as well as the split between principal and interest over time; "Present Value of Perpetuities and Annuities by Term" illustrates the changing relationship between a perpetuity and annuities (which share the same annual payment stream but differ in their term lengths) as interest rates change; "Practice Questions for Time Value of Money" is a self-study tool which enables readers to check their comprehension.

  • Glenorna Coffee

Glenorna Coffee, a manufacturer and exporter of coffee powder, had been in the business of instant coffee and roasted ground blends for 34 years. It sourced coffee from India and had buyers across the globe. In 2013, the owner of Glenorna had to decide whether or not to pursue backward integration and buy coffee gardens. He had called upon the company’s accountant to find out whether it was viable to venture into the acquisition of coffee plantations or if the firm should remain with its existing business operations. With backward integration, Glenorna had a better chance of entering the specialty coffee business. If purchasing plantations was profitable, why had competitors such as Nestlé continued to source beans from the open market? Should Glenorna acquire plantations and venture into the specialty coffee business?

  • Indian Rupee Crisis of 2013

The U.S. Federal Reserve System's decision to taper its quantitative easing program triggered large capital outflows from India, and the rupee depreciated by 13.7 per cent from June to August of 2013. Firms dependent on imports complained of rising costs, but exporters stood to benefit from the depreciation. On a macro level, economic growth dropped and inflation remained high, raising concerns that the much-touted “India growth story” was over. India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, faced the difficult task of fighting inflation and stopping the rupee's decline once the economic growth had slowed down. Expectations were high for an appropriate action from the bank, even as room for policy maneuverability appeared limited.

  • Bankinter Growth Options During the Spanish Crisis

The president of Bankinter, a Spanish bank, decided that the time was right to expand. At the time, the Spanish economy was experiencing a severe downturn and the banking system was going through major reforms. He believed that growth could occur either organically or through acquisitions — as long as the target business complemented Bankinter’s present operations and preserved the company’s values and organizational culture. His goal was to choose one option, while determining the price that should be paid if an acquisition offer was made. In this case, the purchase would be funded entirely through the issue of additional shares. The offer price would have to be justified to existing shareholders, who would only agree if the acquisition created value for them. At the same time, the success of the merger depended on the offer being accepted, so the price had to be attractive to the target company’s shareholders.

  • Triodos Bank: Measuring Sustainability Performance

An increasing number of organizations are subscribing to sustainability, but how can sustainability performance be measured? Unlike financial performance, which can be assessed through accounting techniques that aggregate various numeric indicators, sustainability performance is more complicated. For financial institutions the situation is even less straightforward - while traditional sustainability frameworks, such as the triple bottom line (TBL), are concerned with the direct inputs and outputs of an organization, financial institutions have indirect impacts based on the loans and financial instruments they offer. Triodos Bank, a pioneer in the sustainability banking sector since it was founded in the Netherlands in 1972, has been grappling with this issue. Peter Blom, Triodos Bank's CEO, defined sustainable banks as "value-driven banks" that "prioritize people over profits" by "lend[ing] to and invest[ing] in organizations that benefit people and the environment." Transforming this definition of sustainable banking into a tangible performance measurement framework was a significant challenge facing managers at Triodos Bank. From aiding loan officers in their decision-making process to determining how successful Triodos Bank was at fulfilling its mission, measuring sustainability performance was a daunting yet critical challenge. The case assesses Triodos Bank's various initiatives, along with the current best practices for measuring sustainability performance. While some frameworks have been developed to cater to the financial sector, particularly the investment sector (which has many similarities to the sustainable banking sector), no existing frameworks effectively convey the sustainability performance of Triodos Bank. The case therefore provides an excellent vehicle for students to develop a sustainability performance measurement framework for Triodos Bank.
