  • Contrasting China's Yunan Model with Bangladesh's Yunus Model for Microfinance

In 2008, about the time when the Yunus Model of microfinancing was under attack in its home country of Bangladesh, the Yunan Model was begun in rural China. The original model suffered from inefficiencies, high interest rates and allegations of improprieties against the founder, Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. By contrast, the Yunan Model relied on social capital and mechanism design theory to enlist the rural population, financial institutions and government in a cooperative effort to increase the financial stability and entrepreneurship level of one of the poorest areas of the country. Could "microfinance with Chinese characteristics" offer a plan to reduce poverty across China?

  • Project Finance for Autopistas del Centro

In late spring 2009, Osvaldo Martínez, Finance Manager at Autopistas del Centro, a private company operating a toll road bypass in Madrid, was analysing with growing concern the financial impact of reduced traffic on its toll road. In 2008, overall freeway traffic in Spain fell by 12%, and the trend did not suggest any improvement in 2009. Mr. Martínez believed the situation to be basically unsustainable. The company's lenders wanted to renegotiate costs and deadlines, due to the increase in risk of the project. Due to the drop in revenues and operating earnings, the project would need an additional two million euros and the current shareholders refused to agree to all the refinancing of the project coming out of their pockets. Operational and financial improvements would be needed in order for the project to be viable and offer at least a minimal return. The case describes the progress of a project finance operation from its beginnings in 2004, and the situation of the project in 2009 in the face of a crisis and consequent failure to meet the initially expected cash flows. The case offers an excellent opportunity to discuss what to do when a Project Finance fails, analysing the alternative ways of ensuring the project's viability and profitability.

  • Krishna Bhima Samruddhi Local Area Bank (KBSLAB): A Decade Review

Microcredit made a dramatic entry into the banking lexicon when Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus ushered in a new era of social banking with his Grameen Bank. BASIX, the Indian replicator of the Nobel laureate's ideology, (albeit with a different methodology of livelihood promotion), had established itself as an effective microfinance institution (MFI) in India. It had successfully convinced the government of the need for, and feasibility of, setting up financial institutions such as "local banks" in rural areas to mobilize rural savings and provide meaningful livelihoods for the poor, especially women. KBSLAB, a local bank established by BASIX, had performed very well initially, but had reached a critical juncture in its journey in 2011. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) guidelines were similar for the commercial banks and the Local Area Banks in many aspects like the statutory liquidity ratio and the cash reserve ratio requirements. But the geographical restrictions on the local area banks were making it difficult to expand and meet the compliance and monitoring mechanisms. The case looks at the journey of this unique microfinance banking institution over a decade of its existence and contemplates its future. It raises questions about what actually plagues local area banks in general and KBS in particular, the justifiability of the RBI guidelines and the viability of microcredit banks in the future.

  • Note on Pension Guarantee Funds

The United States and the United Kingdom both had quasi-government agencies that provided back-up insurance for individuals participating in defined benefit ("DB") pension plans. This note compares and contrasts the United Kingdom's Pension Protection Fund ("PPF") with the United States' Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation ("PBGC") to illustrate the implications of poorly designed policy structures (the PBGC) in contrast to those created by well-designed policy (the PPF). Specifically, this note analyzes how differences in governance structure, termination capabilities, funding mechanisms and asset management policies created distinctly different financial outcomes and incentive structures.

  • Buffett's Bid for Media General's Newspapers

On May 12, 2012, BH Media Group, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, announced an offer to buy Media General's (MEG) newspaper division for $142 million in cash and provide debt financing to the struggling firm. Reactions from investors and industry analysts varied greatly: one called it a "great surprise", another wondered if Buffett was investing with his heart rather than his head (he was a paperboy as a child), and a third said it was a "feat of financial engineering." Virtually all of them wondered what the "Oracle of Omaha" saw in the declining U.S. newspaper industry that others did not. The question facing Media General's CEO Marshall Morton was whether to accept the offer or not. As the head of a highly leveraged company whose revenues had fallen 31% in the past four years, whose stock price was down more than 90% off its high, and whose falling profitability left it perilously close to violating key debt covenants, he had to move quickly.

  • 2012 Fuel Hedging at JetBlue Airways

At the start of 2012, Helena Morales, an equity analyst, was examining the jet fuel hedging strategy of JetBlue Airways for the coming year. Airlines cross-hedged their jet fuel price risk using derivatives contracts on other oil products such as WTI and Brent crude oil. Consequently, an airline was exposed to basis risk. In 2011, dislocations in the oil market led to a Brent-WTI premium wherein jet fuel started to move with Brent instead of WTI, as it traditionally did. Faced with hedging losses, several U.S. airlines started to change their hedging strategies, moving away from WTI. But others worried that the Brent-WTI premium might be a temporary phenomenon. For 2012, would JetBlue continue using WTI for its hedges, or would it switch to an alternative such as Brent?

  • Hedge Fund Due Diligence at Leman Alternative Asset Management Company

In early January 2008, a senior VP with LAAMCO, a fund of hedge funds known for alternative investments, was conducting due diligence on an equity market-neutral hedge fund. The hedge fund used an option strategy known as a collar (also known as a bull spread or split-strike conversion). The track record of the hedge fund had been stellar. The fund's performance had not only beaten that of the S&P 500 Index over the same period but had done so with much lower monthly return volatility. As part of the due diligence, it was necessary to backtest the collar strategy and try to quantify how much value the manager, BLM Investment Securities, LLC, (BLM) had added. The case is a disguised representation of an actual hedge fund-the true identity of BLM is revealed to students at the end of the case discussion.

  • Return of the Loan: Commercial Mortgage Investing after the 2008 Financial Crisis

Zoe Greenwood, vice president at Foundation Investment Advisors, was glancing through the offering memorandum for a new commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) deal on April 1, 2010, a time when the opportunities for commercial mortgage investors had been bleak to the point of comical. This new CMBS deal represented the first opportunity to buy CMBS backed by loans to multiple borrowers since credit markets had shut the securitization pipeline in June 2008. The offering gave Greenwood a new investment opportunity to suggest to her firm's latest client. She had planned to recommend an expansion in her client's traditional commercial mortgage business, but these new bonds looked intriguing. Could the new CMBS offer her client a superior risk-return tradeoff compared with making individual mortgage loans?
