  • Decommissioning the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station: 2024 or 2054?

In 2017, a strategic analyst with the Ontario Ministry of Energy, was asked to evaluate the potential for decommissioning the Ontario Power Generation's Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (Pickering) in Pickering, Ontario, at the scheduled end of the plant's operations in 2024, instead of waiting until 2054. Decommissioning Pickering would require $5.264 billion in 2016 terms. Storing the spent fuel would cost another $4.3 billion, for a total of $9.564 billion. Ontario Power Generation had set aside $2.75 billion for decommissioning Pickering and for long-term storage of its spent fuel. To bridge the gap between what it had contributed and what was required, Ontario Power Generation was investing in a decommissioning fund and assuming that its investment would increase in real terms by 3.25 per cent a year. The strategic analyst had to examine what it would cost to decommission Pickering in 2024 versus what it would cost in 2054.

  • Hedging IDR Exposure through Onshore Forward or NDF?

Michael Finney, CEO of US-domiciled Deltrix Lumberjack, pitched his company's logging equipment to an Indonesian logging firm. Indonesian regulation required all quotations to be denominated in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Amidst intense competition, Michael improved his quotation from IDR equivalent to US$4.85 million, to that equivalent to US$4.70 million. This would result in a razor-thin margin for the company as a mere 10% depreciation of the IDR could wipe out Deltrix's US$ profits for this transaction. Michael tasked his treasurer, Dan Martin, to study the recent trend of the US$-IDR exchange rate and to recommend whether Deltrix should hedge the IDR receivables, due six months later, if Deltrix's tender was successful. And if Dan's recommendation was to hedge, whether hedging using the onshore or offshore IDR forward market would be more effective. Offshore hedging would be executed via the IDR Non-Deliverable Forward (NDF) market. A NDF, unlike the traditional forward transaction, would not involve exchange of principals in the two currencies. NDFs were settled via the payment of a Settlement Amount (similar to profit of forwards), which together with the spot transaction to be effected at maturity, would result in a (non-perfect) hedge of the amount of US$ to be converted.

  • Developing a Microfinance Model to Break the Cycle of Poverty

Multigenerational poverty is common in developing countries. Illiteracy, poor health, and unemployment compound a person's ability to break the cycle of poverty. In this article, we break down the process of designing, testing, and implementing a microfinance model to help end multigenerational poverty in an impoverished refugee village in Uganda. We describe key decisions in developing the model and assess its effectiveness as an instrument in achieving this service objective. We believe our grassroots primary research can benefit many NGOs that might be contemplating lending programs in developing nations, as well as other collegiate institutions interested in implementing sustainable programs that allow students the opportunity to work on global issues in developing nations.

  • Yatooq: Longing for Arabic Coffee

As one of the few female entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia, Lateefa Alwaalan had been trying to produce the perfect cup of Arabic coffee for over a decade. In 2007, she began testing various coffee blends, which she later branded Yatooq, the Arabic word for "craving" or "longing". She soon realized that the brewing process was just as important as the blend in consistently producing a great cup of Arabic coffee. Therefore, she developed the world's first Arabic coffee machine in 2013 to complement her blend. Sales of the Yatooq coffee machines grew rapidly in Saudi Arabia, exceeding $2 million in sales in 2014. However, an increase in competition combined with an economic slowdown in the country led to declining sales and increasing costs for Yatooq. Alwaalan reflected on the decisions she made to date, wondering if the revenue decline could have been avoided. She also contemplated on the path forward, specifically whether she should iterate on her go-to-market strategy with her existing product or pivot to an entirely different product.

  • Spotify's Direct-Listing IPO

In early April 2018, Spotify Technology SA (Spotify) had planned a rare direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Unlike typical initial public offerings (IPOs), which used investment banks as underwriters to help set an IPO price, Spotify’s direct listing would allow market participants to determine the initial price. In a typical IPO, investment banks shopped the potential offer to various clients and, in the process of book building, determined a range for the offer when it started trading. They also often provided support for the issue on the day it started to trade, limiting the downside for shareholders if demand was low. In Spotify’s case, the investment banks were only being paid a nominal fee, and Spotify was not raising capital in the offering. The stock simply started trading on the prescribed day. A portfolio manager with a hedge fund that focused on growing technology companies was considering investing in the firm, but faced a challenge: how could she estimate Spotify’s value when it started to trade?

  • The Solar Photovoltaic Tariff of 2018

On April 26, 2017, Suniva Incorporated, a Chinese-owned U.S. manufacturer of solar cells and panels, filed a Section 201 trade case seeking protection-specifically, temporary relief-from foreign manufacturers of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (CSPV) cells and modules. U.S. trade law permits the president of the United States to grant some form of temporary relief against foreign imports that are found to officially injure a domestic industry. The filing ignited a firestorm of controversy in the solar industry inside and outside of the U.S. The sought-after protection was opposed by many renewable energy interest groups, including most of the U.S. solar energy industry itself. Opponents believed that a tariff on CSPV cells and modules would cost more jobs than they would save and, even with import protection, there was no future for CSPV manufacturing in the U.S.
