  • Modernizing France or Dismantling Its Social Contract? Macron's Reforms

This case uses France's labor market and regulation reforms in 2018 to illustrate how deregulation and labor market reforms can affect an economy's potential GDP. The case discusses President Emmanuel Macron's efforts to boost economic growth through economic liberalization, focusing on small- and medium-sized enterprises. The material allows for an examination of the effects of regulation on labor policy. If implemented, would the reforms boost broadly based growth? Would lowering taxes and regulation continue to boost France's economy, or would it unnecessarily put France's social safety net at risk?

  • BE Oil

Quentin Bell, the owner of a small oil extraction firm, BE Oil, owns the rights to drill on six different wells. Drilling requires substantial up-front costs, and each well has different drilling costs and production capability. Bell's challenge is to decide which wells to drill based on his expectation of the price of oil when it is extracted. The case was written for use in Darden's global economies and markets (GEM) core course during a class on the economics of competitive markets. The concepts of supply, demand, and equilibrium are often obscure to students at this early stage in the course, and this case provides a concrete example of how a firm in a competitive commodity market determines how much oil to produce. Students are asked to derive the firm's supply curve, relate that to the oil market supply curve, and ultimately recommend how much oil the firm should plan to produce. The plan pushes students to think about marginal cost/ marginal benefit analysis, implicitly at first and explicitly at the end of class. Students are also asked to consider how exogenous variables in the oil market affect the oil price and the firm's decision.

  • Tariffs on Tires (A)

In September 2009, President Barack Obama announced a hefty tariff on low-cost automobile and light truck tires imported from China. Earlier that year, the United Steelworkers of America, which represented workers in many US tire production plants, had filed for protection under Section 421 (the "China safeguard") of the US Trade Act of 1974. Supporters of the decision saw the tariff on Chinese tires as an extension of the president's efforts to enhance the enforcement of trade laws, the position Obama had adopted time and again as a candidate in 2007. Could the tire safeguard provide a template for how policymakers could protect American workers?

  • Repositioning Chongqing as the Gateway to Central Asia and Europe

This case focuses on the economic landscape of the Chinese city of Chongqing from 2007, the year when its municipal economy began a decade-long ascent even as China's economic growth had slowed down, especially since the 2008 global financial crisis. The case examines the policies that Chongqing's government took to promote economic growth, as well as the socio-political and economic context surrounding them. It also highlights the challenges and opportunities that Chongqing faced at the end of 2017, and will have to deal with in its near future against the background of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This case is suitable for a China-specific course as a "context case" on local and regional development. It may also be suitable for teaching the BRI initiative. This case could illustrate how Chinese provinces are adjusting their policies to the BRI, as well as the implications for businesses from the adjustment.

  • Private Equity Achieves Returns through Operating Improvements: CD&R's Acquisition and Turnaround of Hertz

Private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) is preparing a bid for leading US car rental agency Hertz. By replacing Hertz's top managers, improving capital management and driving down operating costs, CD&R sees an opportunity to nearly double EBITDA. However, the turnaround involves significant risks, which CD&R must weigh in preparing its bidding stategy. Students are required to assess and value the business, evaluate a post-acquisition operating turnaround plan requiring new leadership, select a financial structure to mitigate significant cyclicality, and craft a winning bidding strategy in the context of a competitive auction. • The Specific Factors Model for Trade and Migration

When proposing new or modified economic policies, it is important to understand the distributional implications of such policies. Do they potentially affect everyone in the same way? Or can we expect different impacts for different segments of the population? The specific factors model is a canonical model that is very well suited to address distributional questions related to a range of economic policies, as it distinguishes multiple sectors in the economy that each employ a different mix of production factors (such as labor and capital). This technical note focuses on applications of the specific factors model to international trade policies; toward the end it also explores how the model might be useful in other settings. At Darden, this note is used in the second-year International Trade elective; a variant of the same model is taught in the Global Economics of Water elective. It would also be suitable in courses covering short-, medium-, and long-run analyses of economic policy.

  • A Theory of GATT/WTO

This note provides a few basic facts about the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and its successor, the World Trade Organization (WTO). We also investigate why we need those institutions from an economic perspective. In other words, we seek to understand what problems the GATT/WTO solve, and why without them the trade liberalizations that they seek would not emerge.

  • Trump Says the WTO Is a Disaster

In 2017, it was a challenge to assess the future of global trade. It was an open question whether the US financial crisis and the recession that it triggered would mark a turning point for the liberal post-World War II world order. If one looked toward Europe, China, Latin America, and Japan, there was a flurry of activity. New trade agreements were being completed and pursued. In Washington, DC, on the other hand, President Donald Trump seemed set on ripping apart and/or renegotiating any trade deal the United States was ever part of. This case explores Trump's opinions and emerging policy stance on trade, bilateralism, and the global economy, among others. It also gives an overview of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and asks whether the Trump presidency would constitute a major challenge to the WTO and what it stood for in 2017.

  • Microfinance Ecosystem: How Connectors, Interactors, and Institutionalizers Co-Create Value

Since the mid-1990s, the number of microfinance institutions (MFIs) has grown tremendously, with more than 10,000 worldwide varying in size and approach. Despite their continued growth and variety, the value of MFIs has been hotly debated. Furthermore, managers and founders of MFIs have also faced the challenge of balancing social and financial objectives and understanding effective ways of evaluating their organization's effectiveness. Hence, in this article we closely examine the operations of three distinct types of MFIs and offer a framework of how they collectively create value, with each playing a unique role in a symbiotic relationship: Namaste, an interactor; Kiva, a connector; and Accion, an institutionalizer. Interactors build relationships with clients and facilitate the flow of information to connectors and institutionalizers that disseminate this data to capital markets, build confidence, and fuel capital flow into the MF industry. The latter disseminates innovation and best practices. Thus, it is critical that each MFI recognizes its symbiotic role and evaluate itself accordingly instead of spreading itself across roles.

  • Swap Curve Steepener

The case is about a decision problem facing James on whether or not to invest in a structured product called the "CMS Steepener" issued by a large US investment bank. The payoff from the product is linked to two constant maturity swap (CMS) rates, and the investor profits if the difference between the two CMS rates increases, or alternatively if the CMS curve steepens. The case describes the risks that investing in such a product poses, and presents relevant data on the CMS rates, term structure and recent financial history of the issuer to help resolve James's decision problem.

  • Teacher Incentives

Every manager faces the problem of motivating employees to show up to work, focus on the assigned task, and work hard. In the absence of strong motivations to work or close monitoring by managers, employees tend to shirk, a phenomenon that economists call 'moral hazard'. In view of this problem, the worker's employment contract should be designed so that a part of the payoff (both monetary and non-monetary) is conditional on performance. In tasks where the manager can directly observe and monitor the worker's effort, designing such a conditional contract is easy. For example, a salesperson is offered a bonus directly depending upon the number of items he sells. However, when the effort is not so easily observable, overcoming potential moral hazard becomes harder. Using different policy experiments conducted with teachers in India, Kenya and United States, this case study explores how to motivate school teachers to turn up for class, teach well and put in maximum effort towards educating their students.

  • Survival Analysis in Microsoft Excel without Add-ins

Survival analysis refers to a collection of statistical techniques used to analyze the occurrence and expected timing of events. Survival analysis can provide not only the probability of an event of interest occurring, but also the time at which the event is likely to occur. A particularly useful application of survival analysis is in the area of "customer churn"-the loss of clients or customers-which is a major concern in many industries. This note introduces survival analysis and discusses two approaches to examine customer churn: the Kaplan-Meier estimator and the Cox proportional hazards model. Instructions are provided on how to build these models in Microsoft Excel, without add-ins.

  • Japan's Economy: Abenomics from the Front and Rearview Mirrors

This case uses Japan's low-growth episodes since the 1990s to analyze economic policy in an environment featuring excess capacity, low growth, and low inflation. The case discusses the rationale behind "Abenomics"-Prime Minister Shinzō Abe's three-pronged approach to stimulating Japan's economy. In the case, Haruhiko Kuroda, the governor of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), is tasked with making the case to stick with Abenomics after five years under the policy. Were the three prongs of policy changes on course or was one or more of the prongs failing to reenergize growth? The answer would be especially topical during the upcoming general election, which many viewed as a referendum on Abe's economic policies.

  • Internationalization Strategies of Emerging Market Banks: Challenges and Opportunities

The greatly improved economic fundamentals of the major emerging economies over the last decade have propelled several emerging banks into the ranks of the world's largest. Despite their importance in the global economy, the internationalization of emerging market banks remains an understudied phenomenon. This article examines factors that may influence the internationalization strategies of emerging market banks in the private banking sector, both when going abroad (take-off) and upon arrival in a host country (landing). The private banking sector is of significant interest given its importance in many leading financial centers around the world while undergoing major transformation due to the worldwide financial crisis, several recent scandals, and a fast-changing regulatory environment. We highlight the internationalization strategies of two banks from emerging countries, China and Brazil, and their experience in Switzerland's traditional private banking sector. These two cases highlight factors that may influence successful internationalization such as prior industry experience, existing client base, entry strategy, ownership type, and the liability of foreignness. Our findings offer valuable implications for managers from other emerging economies by providing a better understanding of how emerging market banks expand internationally.

  • Combating the Yoga Guru: Dabur's Dilemma

The case intends to introduce the reader to a disruption in the Indian FMCG industry. A single new entrant, Patanjali entered the FMCG industry in 2006, combating incumbents and attacking them on all fronts. Within a short span of time, it was able to produce results and exceed industry expectations. The case starts with the evolution story of Dabur, the world's largest Ayurvedic and natural healthcare company. It indicates the major milestones of the company and how it has been able to combat all sorts of threats but retain the top spot in many of the segments it operates in, over the years. The case then discusses a potential threat to Dabur from the new entrant, Patanjali. Building on its Ayurveda brand, Patanjali launched a foray of FMCG products and, drastically reduced prices. Using the power of a Yoga guru that made the product so widely accepted among the Indian masses, Patanjali is threatening every FMCG giant in the country. The case then goes on to depict how Patanjali seems to have gone on a direct frontal attack against all existing big players. The case is written from the perspective of Dabur to understand the nature of competition it faces from Patanjali.

While the short-term effect on profits would be substantial, the long-term effects were less clear. The CEO, Martin Shkreli, was constantly in the media flaunting his pricing strategy as a way to maximize Turing's profits. The subsequent attention from media and government officials was forcing the CEO to defend his positions. After announcing to the media on September 23, 2015, that the price of Daraprim would be lowered, Martin Shkreli needed to decide if he would follow through on lowering the price of Daraprim.
