  • Wipro Consumer Care: Merchandising for Success

Visual merchandising (VM) plays an important role in hypercompetitive product categories. Though shoppers may be exposed to advertisements extolling the virtues of brands, they tend to get swayed at the point of purchase due to an attractive display or simply because of the prominence of a brand at the retail location. As such, companies must invest in processes and infrastructure to make effective VM possible. Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting is among the largest fast-moving consumer goods companies in India and has a wide range of products across different categories. One of its sales development managers must choose between several options for making certain that the company's strategic objectives are met through VM. There are four options, including two models where either the company or its channel partners manage the elements of VM, and two models where VM is outsourced to specialized agencies. All models have their pros and cons and the manager must use the available qualitative and quantitative information to compare the models across different parameters and make a choice.

  • Bitcoin

After three years of trading in relative obscurity, the emergence of bitcoin in 2013 as a viable cryptocurrency is promising both to open up new possibilities to entrepreneurs and incumbent firms and to pose challenges to regulators such as the U.S. Federal Reserve. Rising in value from just $0.05 in mid-2010 to over $1,000 by November 2013, bitcoin is to some people the 21st century version of Tulipmania and to others a viable alternative to fiat currencies. Bitcoin's popularity has prompted the development of competing cryptocurrencies, the establishment of a foundation to promote its interests and the emergence of legitimate and grey market entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the currency itself and its features. Its position as a currency concerns regulators around the world, and hackers have already exploited security gaps in service providers such as Mt. Gox, a bitcoin exchange platform, for their own benefit. Looking at recent developments, what will the future of bitcoin be?

By 2013, however, weak gold prices, asset value writedowns and operational cost overruns have negatively affected the company's stock price. Many attribute the company's problems to Munk's personality and his control over the board of directors. Munk has announced that he will retire in 2014 and will be replaced as chairman by his current co-chairman, John L. Thornton. How can Thornton effectively chair Barrick's board in the wake of Munk's legacy? Will his vision for the company conflict with Munk's dream of turning it into an international diversified mining company? How much of a role will Munk play in the future given his level of informal power? Finally, what can Barrick do to lift itself out of an industry mired in volatility and financial uncertainty?

Or will they be conservative and stay focused on their bottom line?

  • To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate: The Story of Hamilton, Columbia

How does one learn to become an effective advocate on public health issues? "To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate: The Story of Hamilton, Columbia" introduces the reader to the fictional US state of Columbia and its legislature's dilemma over whether to mandate the HPV vaccine for the state's young people or simply to educate them and their parents on the importance and availability of the vaccine. On the surface this appears to be a straightforward public health question: Will a vaccine mandate or a voluntary educational effort be more effective in preventing HPV infection and ultimately HPV-related cancers? But as the narrative unfolds, we come to understand that the legislative context is much more complicated and the tensions myriad, complete with financial and political deal making, power contests in anticipation of an upcoming election, and much more. Furthermore, given that the scientific evidence is still incomplete in some aspects and does not necessarily point to a single best option for the state, the ethical concerns at stake become all the more important. What should Columbia do? As the story draws to a close, the state legislature's Health, Education, and Labor Committee is about to open a public hearing on the dilemma, inviting an array of experts, community leaders, pharmaceutical reps, and government staffers and elected officials to speak on two bills under consideration: one for a mandate and the other for education only. This is where the students will step in to bring the hearing to life, arguing for the course of action they think is most prudent and learning techniques in effective legislative advocacy on important public health issues in the process.

Started in 2002, the campaign had succeeded in turning India into a high-end tourist destination, as a result bringing about a growth of 16 per cent in the number of foreign visitors. Originally focused on landscape and culture, the campaign evolved to embrace such concepts as spiritual, medical, adventure, film and sports tourism on a year-round basis. In 2012, the culmination of over a decade of effort resulted in three awards at the World Travel Awards. Now, in 2013, uncertainties have multiplied. India has gained more familiarity among and acceptance from foreign tourists of diverse backgrounds, who now expect more differentiation in the choices available. To lure them, the tourism departments of several Indian states and union territories have begun to adopt their own advertising campaigns. Can Indian tourism, which is based on a unified branding approach, sustain its growth in the long run? Is it more advantageous to change to a system in which different tourism products and regions are branded distinctly?
