Blessed are the Peacemakers: Senator Danforth as Special Envoy to the Sudan
After the attack on the World Trade Towers on September 11th, Senator John (Jack) C. Danforth's appointment as the president's special envoy to the Sudan took on a much deeper significance. As an ordained Episcopal priest the senator, closely backed by the president, brought a new strategy to the end the decades long civil war. Danforth strategically moved to align fragmented peace efforts in the US, Europe, and Africa around one initiative led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and sought to engage the religious Muslim and Christian religious leaders in solving the differences between the North and the South. Unlike previous envoys, Danforth proposed specific tests and benchmarks to determine if peace between the two parties was even feasible. He further insisted on actions to measure progress and as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, he dragged the entire Security Council to Africa to push the peace process forward. Danforth's philosophy was to listen to both sides and not to condemn the atrocities committed by both parties, but to bring peace. This case allows students to consider Danforth's strategic approach to finding peace and to compare and contrast it with efforts at peace in the Darfur conflict. It further examines peace efforts in ethnically and religiously divided societies, and views the peace process through the lenses of some of the religious leaders within the country. It can be used in courses on religion and politics, civil wars, ethnic conflict, negotiations, national security, leadership, Africa policy, public policy, and international relations. Acciona and the Battle for Control of Endesa
Acciona, S.A. is a global infrastructure and renewable energy conglomerate that is publicly traded in Spain and controlled by the Entrecanales family. In 2006, the company joined the highly politicized cross-border takeover battle for Spain's largest electric utility, Endesa, by acquiring a 10% stake that it subsequently built up to 21%. Other interested suitors were E.ON and Enel, the largest electric utilities in Germany and Italy, respectively. In March 2007, Acciona's executive chairman Jose Manuel Entrecanales is considering three strategic alternatives: tendering its shares--and realizing a capital gain of 1.2 billion euros, 13% of Acciona's market capitalization; holding out as a strategic but minority shareholder in Endesa; or negotiating an agreement with Enel and/or E.ON. -

J&L Railroad: The Board Meeting
This short case could be handed out at the end of class discussion on "J&L Railroad" [UV0251] in preparation for the following class, or if students are more experienced with hedging and option pricing, the instructor may choose to cover both cases in a single class period. It is the companion case to "J&L Railroad" [UV0251], and presents more technical issues regarding the hedging problem by requiring students to understand option-pricing principles. The board likes the CFO's hedging recommendations, but it wants a more careful analysis of the bank's prices for its risk-management products: the caps and floors. Besides demanding an understanding of option pricing, this case puts particular emphasis on the calculation and use of implied volatility. -

Clean Coal in the U.S. and China: An Industry Note
This case covers the coal industry and clean coal initiatives in the Unites States and China. Coal is a crucial source of global energy, but coal-fired plants are environmentally unfriendly and are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. One way to reduce emission is through clean coal technologies, a term which usually refers to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), also referred to as Carbon Capture and Sequestration. CCS projects around the world are in the pilot and planning stage. The U.S. government has become involved in promoting clean coal technology by setting aside $3.4 billion for CCS projects through the Department of Energy. One billion of that will go toward a troubled CCS project called "FutureGen" in Illinois, and the government is trying to put together a group of 20 private companies to invest in the project in order for it to move forward. Private Companies, such as American Electric Power Company and Duke Energy are also working on their own individual CCS pilot projects. The Chinese government has also gotten involved in promoting clean coal technologies by dedicating billions of dollars to technology development and joining with private companies on CCS projects, the most notable of which is GreenGen. Seventy percent of China's energy comes from coal, as well as eighty percent of its electricity. The case also looks at the arguments and impact of environmentalists on the adoption of clean coal technologies. Environmentalists, most notably former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, believe that clean coal is a myth and have been lobbying against clean coal and coal in general. -
Duckworth Asset Management Inc.
In October 2008, the manager of client services at Duckworth Asset Management Inc. (Duckworth), an investment firm headquartered in St. John's, Newfoundland, was preparing for a briefing with Duckworth's vice-president of investments. The vice-president had been fielding several phone calls in the past few weeks, all from clients concerned about the significant drop in global financial markets. Since its June 2008 peak, Canada's S&P/TSX had dropped 33 per cent - one of the fastest market corrections in history. One client in particular - the Canadian Swimming Scholarship Foundation (CSSF) - had asked for a meeting with the vice-president regarding alternative investments. The CSSF had heard from another foundation that market neutral strategies could help them manage the volatility they were experiencing with their current holdings. The vice-president had asked the client-services manager to prepare a recommendation on how to best explain events in the current market, the concept of investment risk and if a market neutral strategy could help reduce total portfolio vulnerability. -
