Identifying Industries: Financial Statement Analysis and Financial Ratio Analysis
內容大綱
Students were provided with the financial data for 10 major companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2019. They were also given a list of 10 major industries. As an exercise, students were then asked to identify which company operated within which industry. The exercise would test the students' understanding of how a company’s financial data can be specific to a particular industry. Using only financial figures, could the student identify within which industry each company operated?
學習目標
This exercise can be used in undergraduate- and graduate-level courses on finance or accounting. It helps students develop their understanding of financial statements and financial ratios. It also improves students’ knowledge of the financial characteristics of different industries. Students are encouraged to participate and build arguments by justifying their matching results, which creates a competitive and fun environment in the class. Students who have worked in any of the industries featured in the exercise can share their experiences during the analysis and help classmates appreciate industry differences based on accounting and financial information. This exercise can work as a group discussion or an opportunity for student presentations, or both.
