A female expatriate manager working for a large multinational financial institution must contend with gender discrimination. She had been offered a promotion and the choice of two positions. When she made her decision and informed her boss, he told her that she could not have the job she chose because it would mean periodic travel into Saudi Arabia, which, he believed, would not be possible for a woman.

<ul><li>To provide a case of a competent female manager to show that women can succeed in international management including, from a cultural perspective, in some difficult places.</li><li>To deal with the issue of gender discrimination in the selection of women for overseas assignments and to deal with some of the myths surrounding the apparent ambivalence to select women for these assignments.</li><li>To learn about Arab culture and about Islam, and to explore the role of women in Arab cultures in comparison to North America.</li></ul>
