  • OYO: Global Expansion

Between 2016 and 2019, the India-based budget hotel start-up Oravel Stays Private Limited (OYO) expanded into nine countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. However, OYO faced several crises in its home country: contracted hoteliers of OYO threatened to file lawsuits against the start-up for breach of contract, and customers raised service quality issues. Critics believed that with such rapid internationalization, OYO's founder was simply burning through the cash of venture capitalists. Nevertheless, the founder was determined to expand internationally while enhancing OYO's service portfolio in India. Should he reconsider his decision to focus on international markets instead of the domestic market? Could legal issues in OYO's home country create impediments to this growth plan? How should he deal with these issues?

  • Nike: Ethics Versus Reputation in the #MeToo Era

In March 2018, a report on workplace harassment issues was brought to the chief executive officer of Nike, Inc. (Nike), Mark Parker. The report was a result of a covert survey conducted by the female employees at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, after the company's human resources (HR) department failed to respond to the women's repeated complaints. Soon, several senior executives left Nike. Although Parker took several steps to strengthen HR, some employees wondered whether the women's complaints had been handled appropriately. Nevertheless, according to experts, the behaviour the women described did not amount to harassment in legal terms. Was Parker's response to the survey a matter of reputation management or of genuine ethical concern? Why did the HR department not respond to the female employees' complaints earlier? If a case of harassment in legal terms could not be made against the executives, should they have been let go? If senior executives like Edwards committed or condoned harassment, should Parker allow those executives to receive severance packages?

  • Toys “R” Us: What Went Wrong?

In early 2018, Toys “R” Us, an iconic toy retailer, filed for liquidation due to intense competition, heavy debt, poor store merchandise, and a non-user-friendly website. Some experts believed that if Toys “R” Us had filed for bankruptcy after the holiday season, its turnaround efforts would have been more successful. However, a toy maker and founder of MGA Entertainment made a bid to purchase Toys “R” Us, but his offer was denied on the grounds of the value being less than the threshold liquidation value. In April 2018, as he continued in his efforts to buy Toys “R” Us and turn it around, industry experts worried about the future of the toy industry. Was the toy industry likely to suffer due to the exit of such an iconic brand? How would the changing consumer preferences for online games affect the future of toy makers and retailers? Could the current chief executive officer of Toys “R” Us have saved the company and if so, where should he have focused his turnaround efforts?

  • Rajesh Exports: Gold Trader to International Jewellery Retailer

Rajesh Exports Limited (REL), founded by Rajesh Mehta in the 1980s and based in India, was the world’s largest, lowest cost gold jewellery manufacturer. REL derived more than 90 per cent of its total revenue from exporting gold jewellery to more than 60 countries; but, in 2017, REL set a goal of increasing the portion of revenue contributed by the retail segment to 90 per cent by 2030—an increase from the current contribution of 10 per cent. REL had initiated strategies to differentiate itself in the retail jewellery segment; nonetheless, analysts were skeptical about REL’s ability to achieve its revenue goal. They pointed to the hindrances of severe competition in the global retail jewellery market; REL’s lack of experience in retail jewellery; and the perception of low quality associated with products produced in India. Was Mehta’s vision to establish REL’s presence in the retail segment appropriate, and if so, how could REL overcome the barriers and establish its identity in the international retail jewellery market?
