  • Audi A8: The World's First Level 3 Autonomous Vehicle

This case, set in May 2019, details the launch strategy of the German automobile company AUDI AG (Audi) for its model A8 sedan, the world’s first Level 3 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) conditional automated vehicle. A Level 3 vehicle uses technology and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms derived from advanced programming to control itself under specific conditions, enabling the human driver to take their eyes off the road and their hands off the steering wheel. Given the fast-paced nature of technology development and the emerging status of the autonomous vehicle industry, this case provides several class discussion points, including first-mover advantage and influencing technological standards in an emerging industry, the ethical implications of technology development and the programming of autonomous vehicles to make decisions, and the role of government regulations and customers in autonomous vehicle programming. Further discussions could address the development of smart cities and related technology, the data privacy issues of autonomous vehicles, the decisions of an established company to develop a risky technology, and future international market entries with these vehicles.

The case is presented in three parts to allow faculty to pose the question, "Should President Sirleaf impose a quarantine?" (A case) before asking students to reconsider the question in light of the community's response to the government and security force actions (B case). An epilogue describes how the West Point community engaged in a peaceful and effective resolution.

The product received strong positive reviews at the time of its launch, but its initial price of CA$2,500 per kit left it out of reach for most of its intended customers. By late 2018, she had sold fewer than 40 kits and held an excess inventory of over 100 unsold kits. Now she needed to decide whether and how to adapt her current approach to become successful in the current market. Should she consider other potential markets instead? • How to Govern, Manage, and Work Amid COVID-19

What should businesses be doing during the coronavirus pandemic? That’s a tough question, and few of us imagined the challenges we face while being isolated from friends, family, and colleagues. Any crisis will serve up some market opportunities to help consumers adjust, and business leaders should seize them. While doing this, it is important to note that the role of corporations was already under pressure to change prior to the pandemic. Ensuring your business does its part as a good corporate citizen isn’t just the right thing to do. When the dust settles, consumers will remember how organizations acted. Former Ivey Professor Christine Pearson recommends executives focus on the following actions: hope for the best, prepare for the worst; make your role model proud; create a superb crisis management team; treat your employees right; and model healthy self-care. Ivey Professor Andreas Schotter advises multinationals to ensure they keep track of all vulnerabilities as they scramble to maintain operations because retreating from globalization is not a viable long-term strategy. Ivey instructor Eric Janssen recommends that early-stage ventures try to increase revenue; move to collect receivables; delay payables; cut non-essential spending; and consider temporary layoffs. To maintain morale, Ivey faculty member David Wood suggests end-of-week team parties on Zoom or similar platforms to give employees a virtual meeting that they can enjoy. Finally, Ivey Professor Paul Beamish notes that everyone in business should maintain perspective—the type of setback they experience as a hassle of doing business often manifests in poor countries as a life-or-death situation.

  • Girls Who Code

In 2012, Reshma Saujani founded Girls Who Code (GWC) with the mission of closing the technology (tech) industry's gender gap. While GWC offered coding education programs to middle- and high-school-aged girls, the organization also sought to alter cultural stereotypes surrounding women in tech through books, advertisements, and social media campaigns. Saujani remained active in promoting her organization's message through a TED Talk, a best-selling book, and frequent media appearances and interviews. By 2019, GWC had served approximately 185,000 girls, expanded its programs to all 50 U.S. states, and reached hundreds of millions of individuals through its advertising and media campaigns. However, the tech gender gap was still significant. Saujani claimed that the organization was on track to close the gender gap among entry level tech roles by 2027. Would GWC reach its goal? If not, were there new initiatives that it should consider to increase its effectiveness?
