  • Mi Tiendecita de Moda: Selling Fashion Through Facebook in Peru

A young Peruvian MBA graduate, who previously had worked in international marketing firms, founded an online fashion store and has been selling North American fashion products through Facebook, personal sales events and pop-up stores. The business has been growing profitably with an increasing customer base, overcoming initial supply side issues. Three years after the launch, however, the personal approach to satisfy each customer, a stronghold of the founder's business philosophy, is making expansion difficult. The business has grown to a point where it is barely manageable personally. Is expansion the right decision and if so, which type? Can the fashion store founder scale the business and still enjoy the lifestyle benefits of independence and flexible working hours?

  • ID Fresh: The Way Forward

As a result of teamwork and small steps taken by the four cousins and founders, who also fill the top management positions, ID Fresh has grown, in less than 10 years, from a kirana store (a small Indian neighbourhood grocery/retail shop) to a successful mid-sized ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook food company. The managing director recognizes the need to transition to a more proficient organization by recruiting highly motivated professionals to fill the management positions. In doing so, the company will need to reconcile the working style of the incoming professionals with the founders' humble background and strong ethics and values that are based in their religious faith.

  • Package Pricing at Mission Hospital

Mission Hospital started its operations on April 02, 2008 with the aim of providing highest quality patient care facilities to all individuals at affordable rates. This super specialty hospital located in Durgapur, West Bengal, India, specializes in cardiac surgeries. Many of its patients are from nearby states and neighboring countries, and are covered under different health schemes. Among hospitals in India, flat rate for different treatments is becoming popular, mainly owing to healthcare tourism and government schemes. Dr. Satyajit Bose, chairman of Mission Hospital, was considering adoption of a package pricing (flat fee) strategy under which patients would be provided a fixed price for their treatment at the time of admission. This would imply that the package price should be calculated by the hospital on the basis of patient's clinical and non-clinical information available at the time of admission. Flat fee (or package pricing) can result in a loss to the hospitals if they do not accurately estimate the treatment cost for a patient. The hospital faces the challenge of identifying the key factors that drive the total cost of treatment so that it can quote an appropriate price to the patient.

  • Should Natco Explore the Out-Licensing Opportunity?

New medicine launches in India had come down by nearly 80 per cent during the last six years. The risks associated with new-drug development were high, and for that reason, companies were considering buying the potential molecules in the early stages of development at comparatively cheaper rates. Apart from cutting costs, out-licensing provided opportunities for domestic players to enter into collaborations with global players. Now, with out-licensing gaining popularity in the global pharmaceutical markets, one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical companies in India wondered whether out-licensing could be its next big Indian opportunity.

  • ''Yes, and. . .'': What improv theater can teach service firms

This installment of Marketing & Technology introduces managers to improvisation--colloquially known as 'improv'--or acting sans pre-planning, as a device for delivering warm, unmechanical service without breaking the training budget. We begin by describing improv, reviewing its history, and covering the rules and guidelines that improv uses. Then we explore some of the ways in which improv has been used in non-theater settings, and we present a number of examples of improv in customer service. We conclude by offering three lessons that improv theater can teach service firms.

  • How to avoid regulatory antitrust scrutiny: The behavioral defense

Firms, especially those with high profit margins, are often scrutinized by regulatory authorities that suspect them of anticompetitive practices such as cartel formation. In this article I introduce a behavioral approach of competing that suggests firms with even the highest of margins are actually competing aggressively against each other, rather than colluding as the regulatory authorities might suggest. Firms using the behavioral approach can signal to antitrust authorities that their intent is not to restrain competition. Four mechanisms show this competitive orientation: (1) competitive intensity, (2) competitive complexity, (3) attack imitation, and (4) competitive action speed.

  • Launching and leading intense teams

Collaborative work environments and team-based structures are commonly used across different types of organizations. Leaders increasingly need models for leading in complex intense teaming situations. To understand the team leader's role, it is important to appreciate and know the dynamics of teamwork, including how teams develop over time and the teaming elements that are important for success. By understanding the stages of team development and the dynamics occurring within a team setting, leaders can focus initiatives that are directed at certain critical moments for the team and build positive team dynamics. Team leaders should leverage the natural timelines that are part of running a project to effectively manage team dynamics to achieve high performance. Two crucial moments for the team leader are building and launching the team for a new project initiative. Following the project launch, teams start to collaborate and begin the performing and evaluating cycle toward goal accomplishment. In this article, we discuss our work with team leaders across industries to define and describe the role of a team leader, report on research focused on team dynamics and development, identify initiatives for team leaders to significantly improve the performance of intense teams, and specify strategies team leaders can use to turn around underperforming teams. We offer a new model for understanding the stages of team development and build this model to integrate important leadership tasks at each stage.

  • Organizational strategies for filling the customer can-do/must-do gap

Service leaders have learned that it is not enough to attract customers who are ready and willing to experience what their organizations have to offer; they must also attract customers who are able to perform important roles in co-producing a successful service experience. This recognition has led to increasing interest regarding how organizations should manage these quasi-employees to ensure everything that must be done actually is done. Leading service organizations embrace this responsibility and have developed strategies to identify and accommodate variations in their targeted customers' capabilities. They know that client satisfaction depends upon the organization making up for deficiencies between what the customer must do to have a great service experience and what the customer actually can do. Surprisingly, there has been little systematic investigation into how organizations create and execute strategies to ensure that these deficiency gaps are filled. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that organizations that have developed systems and procedures to fill these gaps are likelier to satisfy their customers and achieve higher levels of repeat business than firms that have not. This article offers strategies for organizations that commit to bridging the customer can-do/must-do gap and thereby ensuring their customers have a successful service experience.

  • Dürr AG From Premium to Mid Market in China

In the autumn of 2013, the president and chief executive officer of Schenck Shanghai Machinery Corp. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Dürr Group situated in Shanghai, China, was reviewing his business operations. The Dürr Group was a multinational machine tool manufacturer based in Germany. In emerging economies, the mid-market had become the battleground between foreign and local firms. Traditionally, foreign investors earned healthy margins in the premium segment, but many realized that they were missing out on fast-growing market segments and were facing potential threats from local competitors who were moving up-market. To remain competitive and to ensure future growth and profitability, while not compromising the brand's reputation, the Chinese subsidiary had to ensure continued support from headquarters in Germany.

  • Sales Force Management Is for Leaders (Not Closers)

It is widely accepted that the role of any organizational leader involves defining and implementing winning strategies, optimizing resources, developing talent and creating enablers for higher growth and performance, while delivering results. However, it is also commonly believed that sales managers are merely in charge of driving orders and meeting quotas. This needs to change. Today’s competitive market demands that sales force leaders possess market, customer and buying behaviour knowledge, as well as process optimization expertise, internal political skills (to argue for infrastructure resources), coaching and development skills, and the ability to gain commitment from team members. Leaders must know when special incentives are required and in what mix, as well as how to optimize resource allocation. Firms should consider the following questions: Is their sales force leadership comprised of people who excel at working with others? Do their hiring practices identify the knowledge and skill sets that best allow the sales team to sync with customer interface touch points and allow the firm to attract the skills and knowledge that are the most difficult and expensive to develop? Do they proactively seek commitment on behavioural improvements from sales team members, including ones who work from home or alone in the field? Lastly, do they seek the optimal customer relationship and loyalty level?

  • The State of U.S. Public Health: Challenges and Trends

The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity." For many Americans, the World Health Organization's definition of true health seems unattainable, given the multitude of complex problems plaguing the U.S. health system. The United States over the last 50 years has focused most of its health resources on providing medical care for individuals after they fall ill. It has placed far less emphasis on the non-medical determinants of health and the prevention of disease for the lives of its citizens. The result: an infamously expensive "sick care system" that does not perform as well as other wealthy countries across key measures. Americans of all socioeconomic stripes experience poorer health outcomes than their rich country peers. Such trends undermine U.S. international competitiveness. This background note digs deeper into these trends and their origins, the barriers hindering change, and past and current reforms, including the 2010 Affordable Care Act. If fully implemented, the controversial act will help the United States push beyond its myopic sick care focus towards the WHO's true health vision by creating a health system that integrates medical care with public health and prevention for all Americans.
