  • Nest and Allpa Peru: Rendering Transparent Artisan Supply Chains

The Nest and Allpa Peru Case focuses on the issue of making supply chains transparent beyond the factory walls through to the artisan level. Retailers in the home fashion industry are increasingly under pressure by customers and investors to provide complete value chain transparency to demonstrate that they are acting responsibly in moving toward sustainability objectives in both environmental and equitable work practices. While many retailers are taking increased responsibility for sustainable and equitable work practices in manufacturing factories, artisan work carried out beyond the factory walls is difficult to track and most often left unmeasured. This gap in the fashion industry's capability to create full transparency throughout the value chain prohibits retailers from being able to certify that they have full value chain transparency. Nest provides a methodology for companies to understand and manage their artisan work compliance with ethical work practices. Nest works with retailers and their suppliers to create management practices to measure and manage artisan work to enable full supply chain transparency. As the push for sustainability in terms of environmental and equitable work practices increases both from customers and industry practitioners, there is a need for designing and building a credible method for how to measure and manage the artisan work process. The case illustrates that for each fashion company to build this process themselves would be prohibitively costly both in terms of time and financial investment. Nest is an organization that is working toward providing a means for companies to ensure that equitable work practices are followed for artisan work. The case examines how Nest fills this gap, describing how Rebecca van Bergen, CEO of Nest, and her Compliance Team, led by Sarah Otto, provide a credible process for designing, tracking, and certifying compliance of artisan work.

  • Gram Oorja: Energy Access for Remote Rural India

Gram Oorja's mission was to make energy available to people in remote areas in India where the government power supply grid had not reached. • Verve Therapeutics: Taking DNA Editing to Heart

Verve Therapeutics, a public biotech company based in Boston, created a novel approach to addressing cardiovascular disease (CVD) - a leading cause of deaths globally. The company's approach was a single shot treatment to permanently lower cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks. Built on decades of post-doctoral and lab research led by CEO Sekar (Sek) Kathiresan, a trained cardiologist and academic, Verve used gene editing - akin to a molecular surgical procedure-for a curative intent. Not only had the medicine reached human trials in record time, but Verve incorporated new innovations that could allow the technology to be used more widely. The company successfully built a solid syndicate of investors and raised a total of $860 million. Unlike other gene editing or gene therapy companies that focused on rare diseases affecting small populations, Verve's approach was the first example of a gene editing treatment that could potentially benefit millions of people. Verve's lead investor was interested in creating Verve 2.0 and apply the company's expertise to cure a range of rare metabolic diseases. Should Sek continue to build out the core product aimed at treating heart disease, or should he apply the technology to other adjacent diseases? Would this be a potential distraction from Verve's core mission?

  • Venture tales: Practical storytelling strategies underpinning entrepreneurial narratives

Narratives help entrepreneurs and potential venture supporters to make sense of new ventures and to frame entrepreneurial journeys. Despite current understanding of how narratives shape entrepreneurial outcomes, however, there is limited guidance about how entrepreneurs might craft their own narratives in practice. In this article, we identify six types of entrepreneurial narratives-(1) an identity narrative, (2) an opportunity narrative, (3) a projective narrative, (4) a failure narrative, (5) a pivot narrative, and (6) a resourcefulness narrative-and we detail practical storytelling strategies entrepreneurs can use to shape each of these narrative types. We then propose that entrepreneurs can combine, sequence, and revise these narratives as the entrepreneurial journey unfolds. Knowledge of how to strategically manage the full entrepreneurial narrative repertoire enables entrepreneurs to create meaning and value where there once was none and to capture that value over time as a venture grows.

  • The story and the storyteller: Strategic storytelling that gets human attention for entrepreneurs

As a captivating way to engage, inform, and persuade one's audiences, storytelling can serve as a strategic skill in an entrepreneur's arsenal. Although entrepreneurs often use storytelling to mobilize financial resources from external stakeholders, less attention has been paid to how entrepreneurs can leverage this powerful tool to gain strategic partnerships. As such, there is little practical guidance on utilizing storytelling to gain a competitive advantage. In this article, we use wisdom from the academic and practical world to illuminate the science of storytelling, identify the type of stories that entrepreneurs may narrate (or refrain from telling), and understand the mechanism through which stories engage and persuade external stakeholders. We also highlight Freytag's Dramatic Arc, which can teach entrepreneurs how to frame profound stories that gain attention from external stakeholders. We offer practical guidelines for entrepreneurs interested in learning and harnessing the power of compelling storytelling for strategic partnerships.

  • Venture Capital at a Crossroads

Venture capital is a cyclical, ever-changing industry, as seen in recent years. The late 2010s and early 2020s witnessed record amounts of capital flowing into the sector, high valuations, and new types of investors entering the market. Innovations in the seed stage, such as rolling funds and SPVs, enabled more individuals to enter the industry. At the later stages, firms were becoming multi-stage investors, and aggressive hedge funds had entered the space. Then, in 2022, the macroeconomic environment created challenges, fundraising declined, and few venture-backed IPOs occurred. As of 2023, it was unclear where the VC industry was heading next. This note covers these recent events and the industry's increased focus on diversity and ESG.

  • The Adjacent Possible: Opportunities to Shape the World for the Better

Imagine a shadowy future, hovering at the edges of the present state of things; a map of all the various ways in which the present can reinvent itself. This, say the authors, is the ever-present state known as 'the adjacent possible'. In this excerpt from their book (The Upside of Uncertainty), they explain how to tap into this expansive field of opportunity. Their six principles for achieving this include questioning assumptions, considering the worst-case scenario and purposely recombining things. They argue that the adjacent possible is always expanding, both in terms of our own personal creativity and in terms of global innovation. In the end, they show that discovering adjacent possibles requires two things: a willingness to look for them and the courage to pursue them.
