  • Note on Financial Reporting Strategy and Analysis When Managers Have Proprietary Information

Provides a framework that helps explain these real-world observations about accounting and financial statement analysis. When managers have superior information on firms' strategies, and when investors suspect that managers have incentives not to fully disclose this information, financial reporting becomes an important managerial issue. Managers' superior information is a source of both value and distortions in accounting data. Accounting conventions and standards evolve over time to restrict managers' ability to distort financial data, but they leave considerable room for managers to reflect their superior knowledge of their businesses. The net result of these forces is that accrual accounting data are biased and noisy, and investors can assess firms' performance only imprecisely. Managers can improve investors' evaluation of their firms' performance through sound disclosure strategies. Financial analysts attempt to create inside information from public data and therefore play a valuable role in the communication between managers and investors.

  • Bridgeton Industries: Automotive Component & Fabrication Plant

Bridgeton Industries was experiencing reduced sales. To become more competitive it introduced a classification procedure for products based upon their productivity and other factors. Products were classified into three groups: world class, potentially world class, and non-world class. The firm outsources the non-world class products. This outsourcing causes the costs on the remaining products to increase because some costs associated with the outsourced products did not go away. These residual costs caused more products to become non-world class and hence candidates for outsourcing. The firm has entered the death spiral.

  • Analog Devices, Inc.: The Half-Life System

Despite strong senior management support, however, the actual rate of improvement was disappointing until a new measurement philosophy was introduced. Operational people preferred the new measures to the monthly financial reports they continued to receive. The case explores the conflicts between financial measurements and operating improvements.

  • Vital Truths About Managing Your Costs

Four truths apply to every business situation: 1) it is essential to be a lower-cost supplier; 2) to stay competitive, the inflation-adjusted cost of producing and supplying products and services must trend downward; 3) the true cost and profit pictures for each product/market segment must always be known; and 4) a business must concentrate as much on cash flow and balance sheet strengths as it does on profits. Various costs must be carefully isolated and assigned; expense categories such as R&D, sales, general, and administrative costs must not be ignored. Also gross margins should usually not be less than 40% and assets should not be over 60% of annual sales.

  • Minnova Inc. - LAC Shortt Mine

Minnova Lac Shortt mine faces an important capital budgeting decision. A discounted cashflow analysis of a $19 million investment to deepen the existing mine by 300 metres is required. Given the high levels of uncertainty and flux in the external environment (e.g., U.S. exchange rate, price of gold, head grade of ore, recovery percentage, etc), managers need to conduct a sensitivity analysis. Qualitatively, Minnova's mining strategy weighs heavily on the decision because the quantitative analysis results in a slightly negative net present value.
