  • Netflix, Inc., 2007, Spreadsheet Supplement (A)

The protagonist in this case is an analyst attempting to value Netflix, Inc., and check whether her recent buy recommendation at a price of $20.00 per share was still valid. Recent bad news had caused the price to drop and she needed to do her best to figure out what was the future for Netflix, and was it undervalued at $17 per share? Intended for MBA students, this case contains her discounted cash flow valuation and a set of assumptions (revenues per customer, retention rates, etc.) students can use to perform a valuation of the existing Netflix customer base as another approach toward judging the $17 stock price. There are two student spreadsheets available for this case (UV4342 and UV4343).

  • Miracle Life, Inc.

Miracle Life is a firm with a unique setup and organizational structure. Specifically, it is a network marketing firm (also known as multi-level marketing (MLM) firm), which utilizes a large distributor base, and depends on this individual distributor base to sell its products, giving explicit incentives for these individual distributors to both sell its products and sign up other distributors. The case gives students the opportunity to take the basic framework of Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis, and apply it to two unique perspectives of an identical problem. The students will then use this DCF approach to rationalize observed stock prices, connecting the two, and further reconciling how a company's future plan for growth, and the plausibility of this plan, has implications jointly for DCF and stock prices.

  • Prospective Capital Flows and Capital Movements: U.S. Dollar versus Euro

What accounts for the dollar's late-2008 surge against the euro after a multiyear decline? In this case, students consider whether the late-2008 dollar appreciation was an aberration, and what may have caused it. Would this trend reverse, or would global currency market trends continue to propel the dollar? Suitable for both core and elective MBA courses in global financial markets, this case explores factors pointing to further euro appreciation and to others favoring the dollar. Sorting through mounds of evidence is necessary before forecasting the exchange rate's likely path. Filtering that evidence requires both relatively standard thinking about FX markets and an analysis of past and prospective international capital flows.

  • BCE Inc.: World's Largest LBO Deal in Jeopardy

In November 2008, Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. (BCE) appeared to be on track to meet a December 2008 deadline to complete a $52-billion privatization deal. A consortium had previously submitted a winning leveraged buyout (LBO) bid that was estimated to add around $32 billion in debt to the company. Mere days before the deal’s termination date, BCE executives were stunned to hear that KPMG auditors advised that the deal was in jeopardy of collapse — based on a clause that normally merited little attention. The auditors noted that, on the basis of preliminary assessment, the company had not passed a required solvency test which compared the estimated value of BCE’s assets and liabilities in the event that BCE needed to liquidate. BCE executives had little time to determine if the deal could still be saved and, if so, how. Conversely, if the deal could not be completed, what would the organization’s next steps be?
