  • China's Stock Market: Understanding Its Boom-and-Bust Cycles

Using the context of a private-bank chief economist preparing for a client call just as the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (SCI) reached a 29-month high on July 7, 2020, this case places students in a position to prepare an outlook on the prospects for investment in China. It also enables the comparison of China to various potential investment geographies, such as the United States and other financial markets around the globe. The material covers the development of China's financial system from the 1980s to the 2020s, paying particular attention to the banking system, equity and debt markets, and the structure of household-level financial assets. Special emphasis is placed on the most recent boom-and-bust cycles of Chinese equities, helping students to understand the factors suggesting additional equity growth and retraction. The case applies Robert Shiller's standard analysis for speculative bubbles to China's equity market. China is the world's second-largest economy and equity market, but its stock market is still underdeveloped relative to other investment channels, as evidenced in the structure of China's aggregate financial assets and the composition of household wealth. Additionally, the government response and interventions play a large role. How would COVID-19 affect the investment opportunities in China, and how did China's markets compare to markets in the rest of the world? Most importantly, was this the time for American investors to invest in China? This case has been taught in a second-year MBA elective on China in the global economy, in a module examining progress and challenges in Chinese markets. It has also been successfully taught in a course on emerging markets, in a module examining global investments. The material allows for an examination of financial markets in China in particular, and stock market conditions in emerging markets more generally.

  • Rebalancing the Russell Indices: Beta and Volatility

This case examines the role of beta and volatility in assessing the risk of a portfolio. Students assume the role of a fund manager who is adjusting their portfolio in response to the 2014 reconstitution of the fund's benchmark-the Russell 2000 index. The manager chooses between two stocks recently added to the index (and correspondingly to the manager's investment universe): First Citizens Bancshares, Incorporated, and Innoviva, Inc. Under the assumption that the manager's assessment of the future performance of both stocks is similar, students have to determine which stock will increase the risk of the portfolio more. Students are tasked with calculating the beta and standard deviation for the stocks individually and as part of the manager's portfolio, and then choosing which stock to add to the portfolio. The case also introduces the concepts of benchmarking and the construction and rebalancing of market indices.

  • Climate Finance in 2020: Background Note

This technical note provides a brief overview of the state of climate finance at the start of the 2020s. Catastrophes such as the Texas power grid failure and widespread wildfires in other western states have highlighted the increasing financial costs of climate change. The material includes market failures that have constrained the financial sector's response to the challenge of climate change, along with different methods that have been used to target funding toward climate-related opportunities. It offers consideration of the roles of public, private, and blended finance products to provide the trillions of dollars necessary to meet the needs of the Paris Accord. The note can be used both as background material or as a discussion topic itself, in which students might consider how best to address these market failures, how public finance might mobilize private capital, the benefits and drawbacks of vehicles used to date, and the innovative vehicles they might design. The depth of financial detail discussed in the class can be customized to reflect student knowledge.

  • Pershing Square's Pandemic Trade (A)

This case explores the decision that Bill Ackman, CEO and founder of the hedge fund Pershing Square Capital, was considering in late February 2020 about hedging the exposure of the fund's portfolio from the potential financial fallout ensuing from an extreme event like a global pandemic. Bill Ackman had become increasingly concerned about the hedge fund's exposure to a novel, highly infectious, and lethal coronavirus that was spreading across the globe. Ackman and his team needed to decide whether this was a risk worth hedging, and if so, which hedging instruments would best balance risk mitigation, explicit costs (fees and premia), opportunity costs, and the long-run objectives of the fund. Ackman and his team considered fully liquidating their portfolio, as well as hedging it with futures, options, and credit default swaps. For each alternative, they also needed to determine the optimal size and maturity of the hedging position, after accounting for uncertainty over the trajectory of the virus. This case provides students with ample opportunities to analyze and understand tail risk and how to manage it in practice, including explicit calculations of position sizing, costs, risks, and benefits of hedging alternatives.

  • CanniMed Therapeutics Inc.: The IPO Dilemma

In November 2016, the chief executive officer of CanniMed Therapeutics Inc. was considering the company’s options for raising capital through an initial public offering. The decision was critical for the Saskatchewan-based medical cannabis company, which had been an early leader in this fast-growing sector and was seeking to take advantage of growth opportunities. The company’s history in the space dated back to 2000, when it was awarded a sole source five-year contract from Health Canada to supply Canadians with medical marijuana. Since then, the demand for medical cannabis had grown exponentially, and policy liberalization had opened up prospects for the recreational market. CanniMed Therapeutics Inc. had positioned itself as a leader with extensive experience in research, development, and commercialization. The decision for it to go public was clouded by many burning issues and risks, which led to intense speculation among investors as to whether the firm should be going public at this time and, if so, at what price.

  • The Holcim Acquisition: Cementing SMC's Leadership in the Philippines

In May 2019, a retail investor in the Philippines had to decide whether or not to immediately sell his shares in Holcim Philippines, Inc (HPI). The San Miguel Corporation had just announced the acquisition of around 86 per cent controlling interest in HPI. The price of HPI had increased considerably in the months leading up to the acquisition announcement, and this investor was anticipating a large gain. Now, he needed to run a fair value estimate of HPI's price using both the capital-asset-pricing-model-based discounted cash flow method and the comparable multiples method in order to decide what to do: Should he sell his shares at the prevailing market price, wait until the future potential tender offer, or hold his shares indefinitely?

  • Reliance Communications: On the Brink of Bankruptcy

The case is about a decision problem facing a young analyst on identifying the relative mispricing in bonds issued by RCom in Indian Rupees (INR) and US Dollars (USD) and its stock price. As RCom's debt troubles had increased over time, with lawsuits filed by some of its largest lenders, its stock price and credit rating had been falling consistently. On the other hand, the yields on its INR bonds had hardly moved in the meantime. After giving a brief background on RCom's difficulties in establishing itself as one of the largest telecommunications operators in India, the case describes the behaviour of yields on RCom's INR and USD bonds over time. It provides additional relevant financial information about RCom, including its stock price, credit rating and balance sheet variables.

  • Credit Risk Evaluation of a Bridge Loan

Using the example of the acquisition of Syngenta by ChemChina in 2016/17, the case highlights the credit, legal and regulatory risks associated with a complex cross border acquisition finance transaction from a lenders point of view. The case focuses on the credit risk of a short-term bridge loan that is established to enable the borrowing group and its financial advisors to structure a long-term financing solution. Such transactions are typically structured using various special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in different jurisdictions. The complex structure of the transaction, crossing several jurisdictions and regulatory environments, requires the credit analysts to consider not only financial risks but also non-financial risks such as the questions of enforceability of the lender's claims.
