Good progress has been made, but there is still a gap between the new positioning and Kishore's strategic intent on the one hand, and the reality of Zensar's performance on the other. • eBay Inc.: The Portfolio Decision

In January 2019, eBay Inc. (eBay), a California-based e-commerce company, faced an activist campaign centred on its portfolio of businesses. Elliott Management Corporation, the hedge fund leading the campaign, believed that StubHub and Classifieds, two of eBay's companies, did not belong in eBay's portfolio and that their real value was hidden by eBay's ownership. The hedge fund also argued that the lack of focus in eBay's portfolio was distracting the company's senior management from Marketplace, eBay's core business, which was facing stiff competition from other major online retailers. What should the chief executive officer and board chairman do to address these charges about eBay's corporate strategy?

  • TransDigm's Acquisition and Integration of Arkwin Industries

In May 2013, TransDigm, a company that manufactured a wide range of highly engineered aerospace parts for both military and civilian aircraft, announced it was buying Arkwin Industries for $286 million in cash (3 times Arkwin's sales of $91 million). Having acquired more than 40 companies in the past 20 years, TransDigm was an experienced acquirer with a unique business model focused exclusively on value creation. This case describes TransDigm's acquisition, integration, and talent development processes as well as the changes made at Arkwin over the following three years. It serves as a complement to the TransDigm in 2017 case (HBS #720-422). Whereas the TransDigm case provides an overview of the company, its history, its value creation strategy, and its financial performance, the Arkwin Industries case provides a deep dive into a single transaction as a way to illustrate TransDigm's value creation strategy in practice. That strategy consisted of three parts-value-based pricing, cost reductions, and new product development-and had the goal of doubling a target firm's operating margins and cash flows within five years.

  • Nuway Software: Making the New Way Sustainable

While it had procured many contracts over its 15 year history, mostly for the less than truckload and courier sectors of the transportation industry, by the beginning of 2020, it had not found a way to be consistently profitable. Therefore, the goal of Peter Neely, the company's president, was to develop recurring revenue streams. The question was how best to accomplish this goal. Should the company continue with its current business model of building custom software using its Nulogic framework but focus on a diversification strategy? Should it move fully into the creation of an off the shelf software package? Should it utilize a hybrid approach of customizing off the shelf software?

The export manager was also considering Asian markets as an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of that emerging market. In his view, this market was less congested than the competitive European and American craft beer markets. While market selection was an important consideration, the export manager wondered about how to pursue international growth as a viable strategic option for a craft brewer. Did exporting craft beer make sense? With Beau's being Canada's largest producer of organic craft beer, the export manager knew that he had to determine the strategic fit for Beau's growth aspirations in advance of meetings with prospective agents.

  • Tencent Music Entertainment Group: Melding Music with Social Experiences

In November 2019, almost a year after it went public, Tencent Music Entertainment Group ("TME") announced its third quarter financial results. Market investors had had high expectations for TME since it was the strategic music arm spun out by Tencent Holdings Limited ("Tencent"), one of the world's most valuable technology, gaming and social media companies. When TME made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange in late 2018, many individual investors were mystified by its "music-centric social entertainment" business model. Was it just the Chinese version of Spotify, which operated the world's most popular music app? Or was it a truly different business model which might generate more lucrative and diversified business revenue than its international counterparts? Some market analysts and investors also wondered if TME presented a more attractive investment opportunity than similar music streaming platforms in the world, including the global leader Spotify. As the global and domestic market became more competitive, how could TME sustain its competitive advantage by leveraging its synergies with Tencent's dominant position in social networking? Would TME's atypical music and social entertainment business model be easily replicated by its industry rivals or adopted beyond the music industry? What role would music streaming platforms play in driving the growth of the music industry and how would it affect the ecosystem of the global entertainment industry?

  • Growth Paths for Overcoming the Digitalization Paradox

Despite the demonstrated opportunities for revenue enhancement through digitalization, companies often experience a digitalization paradox. This paradox suggests that although companies may invest in digitalization, they often fail to achieve the expected revenue enhancement. In reporting research on 52 companies, we make the following four contributions: First, we focus on industrial companies in the business-to-business context, which largely have been neglected in previous research on digitalization. Second, we introduce the digitali-zation paradox as an important phenomenon in the discussion of revenue enhancement through digitalization. Third, we describe three growth paths: (1) commercializing digital so-lutions, (2) utilizing product connectivity, and (3) establishing an IoT-platform-based applica-tion business. For each growth path, the article takes a dynamic perspective on business models, highlighting triggers and modifications in business-model components (including value proposition, value-creation activities, and profit equation). Fourth, while the described modifications require initial investments to let these growth paths develop, we highlight how growth traps can prevent investments in business-model modifications from leading to revenue enhancement and how they can ultimately lead to the digitalization paradox.
