  • MYSQL Open Source Database in 2006 (B)

MySQL, an open source software firm, grew from a small $10 million company in 2004 into a successful $60 million business by 2006. As it had anticipated, MySQL attracted the attention of the big three IT companies, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle. Actively defending their high-margin, $10 billion database business, the big three implemented various strategies to combat their open source competitors. Details these actions and explores MySQL's options for preserving and growing its business in an increasingly competitive and hostile environment.

  • Starting Small, Reaching High (B)

In the early 1980s, Missouri's director of early childhood education launched a novel parent education pilot project designed to increase children's kindergarten readiness and support family wellbeing by sending specially trained educators on monthly home visits to help parents foster their babies' early development. By 1985, when an evaluation touted strong results for the pilot, the Missouri legislature already had made the program-dubbed Parents as Teachers-a mandatory offering of school districts statewide. Soon after, the St. Louis-based Parents as Teachers National Center, formed to oversee the state program and respond to outside inquiries, became an independent nonprofit. From the start, the National Center staff built quality controls into program design and the training of parent educators while simultaneously embracing rapid growth; by 1999 Parents as Teachers programs served more than 500,000 children in the US and six foreign countries. But despite such quality control efforts, the flexibility and adaptability that aided fast replication left the National Center with no effective way to manage or monitor the more than 2,000 sites worldwide. As a result, the National Center was forced to take a hard look at its replication model, its oversight role, and at how the center could better monitor and improve program quality. • Managing IT Resources in the Context of a Strategic Redeployment: A Hydro-Quebec Case Study (B) - The Solution

Faced with the constant pressure from internal customers, who want answers to their problems on increasingly short order, based on the best possible expertise and at the lowest cost, Hydro-Quebec's IT Solutions Department (ITSD) decided to undertake a twofold structural change aimed at: 1) decentralizing the IT specialists to the IT business units; and 2) establishing a horizontal approach to knowledge management, which would allow the now decentralized specialists to maintain and develop their collective expertise remotely. This case study is written in three parts: (A) the issue that led ITSD to such a change; (B) the solution chosen; and (C) the implementation of this significant change.

  • Procter & Gamble PuR Purifier of Water TM (B): A Second Chance

P&G's PuR: Purifier of Water, a household water treatment sold in small sachets, was developed by P&G, in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and targeted 'bottom of the pyramid' (BOP) households, where water treatment facilities are often lacking. The product was a technological and public health success, but a commercial market failure (Case A). Internal stakeholders, however, believed in the effort. They re-positioned the initiative as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) venture, and found support within P&G's corporate organization, where it ultimately became a centerpiece of P&G's global CSR portfolio (Case B). The case chronicles the journey from product development for the commercial market, to CSR-supported BOP partnerships with the non-profit sector. A related case is available, exploring P&G's social marketing partnership with the global NGO, Population Services International (PSI): 'Procter & Gamble and Population Services International (PSI): Social Marketing for Safe Water'.

  • Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (B): The Hakone Pilot

Nissan Motors Ltd. went through a spectacular turnaround led by Carlos Ghosn. Nevertheless, in spite of strong growth in new car sales, "After Sales" of automobile parts in Japan did not keep up, hurting dealer profitability. Since dealer profitability is a key success factor in the auto industry, Nissan decided to lead its Japanese dealers to (1) improve their cost structure, (2) improve their management methods, and (3) stimulate "customer traffic" via better marketing strategies. The After Sales department identified a Toyota dealership that actually managed to increase its profitability by working on these three factors, and its president agreed to let Nissan benchmark with his operation. The department decided to replicate this Toyota dealer's management methods, costs and strategy. The latter includes significant price reductions on fees for road worthiness tests, which dealers are authorized to perform on behalf of the Japanese government. Many Nissan dealers raised objections to this pricing approach and, in order to convince them, the company executes the strategy on a "pilot" basis, in Hakone, testing the approach and, hopefully, creating a showcase. While initial results were encouraging, the growth in market share seems to flatten, possibly vindicating the doubting dealers' arguments. The case, generates considerable controversy in both MBA and executive classes, includes discussion on market segmentation, pricing strategy, channel design and dealer network management issues. The case includes a detailed discussion of the dealers' "business model", allowing the class to inspect the financial impact of various strategic scenarios for both Nissan and its dealers.
