  • Airbus vs. Boeing (G): New Planes and Upgrades (2011)

This case describes the first commercial flight of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner in 2011, three years after originally planned, as well as the first commercial flight of Airbus' superjumbo, the A380, in 2007. It also describes the companies' current endeavors in 2011, including Airbus' work on the A350 and A320neo (new engine option) and Boeing's development of the 737 MAX. Boeing originally considered replacing the 737 with a completely new and redesigned ("clean-sheet") plane, but utlimately (in part due to pressure from the A320neo) decided to modify the 737 instead.

The planes were grounded for several months until Boeing introduced new safety measures. The case also discusses a problem with cracks on the wings of Airbus's A380 superjumbo, which required the company to make a costly fix to a particular wing component.

  • Airbus vs. Boeing (L): Discontinuing the A380 (February 2019)

This case describes Airbus's February 2019 announcement that it was ending production of the A380, with the last delivery scheduled for 2021. The announcement followed an order cancellation by Emirates, a major customer of the A380. The A380 had faced significant competition from Boeing's Dreamliner, and airlines had difficulty filling their A380s enough to make them fuel efficient and cost effective. Since the plane's launch, Airbus had sold far fewer A380s than it initially predicted.

  • Airbus vs. Boeing (M): MAX 8 Disasters (July 2019)

This case describes the October 2018 and March 2019 crashes of Boeing MAX 8 jets, which together killed over 300 passengers. The planes involved in both crashes shared a problem with a software system called MCAS, which Boeing had revamped at the last minute prior to selling the planes, but had failed to mention in its pilot manuals until after the first crash. As of July 2019, the MAX 8 remained grounded worldwide. As the investigation into the MAX 8 continued, a simultaneous investigation into a Boeing 787 factory found that the company had repeatedly ignored reports of manufacturing defects and debris left on 787s from the factory.

  • The Depression of 1920-1921 and the Return to "Orthodoxy" (B)

In the A case, UV7891, the leaders of the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) and the US Treasury confronted questions that seemed likely to shape the Federal Reserve (Fed) for years to come. What should be the Fed's role in the American economy? How should the Fed help resolve World War I's debt burden and the resulting inflation? What reforms, if any, should the monetary authorities seek? Perhaps most importantly, was the "orthodoxy" of established practices still appropriate in the world that had emerged from the war? This B case, set in April 1921, follows the continued efforts of the FRB and the newly installed Harding administration, as they fight the worsening depression.

  • D&G's Marketing Missteps in China (B): The Deepening Crisis

On the morning of 21 November 2018, Diet Prada, an Instagram account that uncovered the dark secrets and stories about the fashion industry, posted alleged text messages between Dolce & Gabbana S.R.L. (D&G)'s cofounder Stefano Gabbana and fashion writer Michaela Phuong. In the exchange, Stefano complained about the removal of D&G's videos (#DGLovesChina and #DGTheGreatShow) from Chinese social media Weibo amid an onslaught of criticisms. Stefano's alleged anti-China comments on Instagram, coupled with the D&G videos that were perceived as racist and offensive, prompted a slew of outraged responses not only from the Chinese consumers but also from its own brand ambassadors and celebrity partners in China. Many immediately severed ties with the brand. Following this intense backlash from celebrities and consumers, a number of retailers took swift action to sever connections with D&G and removed its products. Bowing to the public backlash from the controversial videos and the Instagram post, the founders of D&G made a personal apology through a video address. This case is a continuation of D&G's marketing missteps in China (A).

  • D&G's Marketing Missteps in China (C): The Epilogue

In November 2018, Dolce & Gabbana S.R.L. (D&G) faced a serious brand crisis following the release of three short videos on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as well as Sina Weibo in China to promote its first-ever fashion show in mainland China. The brand crisis was further exacerbated by derogatory comments alleged to have been made by the cofounder, Stefano Gabbana, on Instagram. The failure of D&G to take swift action to quell the controversy triggered by the videos had resulted in cancellation of the Shanghai catwalk event and a public relations disaster. This case summarises the reputational damage caused by the crisis and initial marketing efforts made by D&G to rebuild its image in China from the end of 2018 up to May 2019. It is the third case of a three-part case series and should be used in conjunction with Case A (D&G's Marketing Missteps in China (A): How to Balance Fashion Brand Strategy and Cultural Sensitivity?) and Case B (D&G's marketing missteps in china (B)-The Deepening crisis).

  • Cryptocurrencies: Investment, Money, or Gamble? (B)

This two-part case series (A and B) puts students into the role of Juan Perez, an investment analyst who works for Suprabanco, a fictional multilateral lending institution headquartered in Bogotá, Colombia. The case opens in 2018, when a risk assessment determined that Venezuela might struggle to repay a Suprabanco loan because it was denominated in US dollars. At the same time, the bank wondered if cryptocurrencies had the potential to increase returns and diversify a portfolio. So, Suprabanco assigned Perez two tasks: 1) Investigate the viability of increasing returns by adding cryptocurrencies to a portfolio of investments and, 2) Determine if cryptocurrencies could be an alternative to the US dollar in case the Venezuelan loan situation deteriorated. Case (A) examines cryptocurrencies in general and focuses specifically on bitcoin, including its origins, requirements (technology, community, and liquidity), regulatory environment, and competitors. Case (B) examines the Venezuelan Petro, a sovereign-issued cryptocurrency designed to overcome hyperinflation and US sanctions that locked the country out of international financial markets. Both cases describe decisions facing Perez as an investment analyst and introduce the reader to cryptocurrency opportunities and challenges, blockchain technology, and ethical dilemmas.

  • Antanas Mockus: The Prohibition of Fireworks in Bogotá - Sequel

"In 1994, Antanas Mockus, an unlikely politician and former President of the prestigious National University of Colombia, became Bogotá's first independent mayor, bringing with him a unique vision of harmonious citizenship. The city's new leadership under Mockus, unlike in the past, included academics and researchers, who helped create a raft of new initiatives designed to align public behavior with the rule of law, through education and positive peer influence-or what was known as "citizenship culture." In his first year, Mockus addressed two big issues plaguing Bogotá, deadly traffic and violence, by using unconventional methods like hiring mimes to control traffic and restricting the sale of alcohol during certain times of year. Mockus later tackled the culture of lighting fireworks-a popular symbol of celebration in Colombia-which typically killed or injured hundreds of adults and children annually. In December 1995, at the beginning of the Christmas celebration season in Bogotá, Mockus faced a difficult decision. An eight-year-old boy had severely burned two of his fingers by lighting fireworks. Earlier that year, Mockus had arrived at a compromise agreement to allow limited sale of fireworks even though the number of fireworks-related injuries had risen steadily in recent years. The incremental approach required fireworks vendors to sell only to adults and to educate their customers about proper use. But if a single child in Bogotá was injured as a result of fireworks during the 1995 Christmas season, a full ban would come into effect. Part A of the case profiles Mockus's campaign for mayor and details the events that led up to the ban on fireworks. It traces how Mockus and his team tried to facilitate social change on fireworks by using a combination of public education, laws and moral pressure.
