  • Supercompra: Sourcing from Small Andean Farmers

Grupo Mazaplan, a Mexican giant, entered the Ecuadorian market by purchasing controlling interest in Supercompra, a large local retailing company. Juan Pedro Zapata, Supercompra's incoming CEO discarded a purchasing model whereby a central company office sourced all produce from national distributors who then made direct deliveries to points of sale, and substituted it with another featuring decentralized company units called "proximity platforms" located in various parts of the country, which bought produce directly from local farmers. The first platform was established in the Andean region, where farmers were smallholders. The case looks at the difficulties faced by companies when trying to develop commercial relations with low-income suppliers through market mechanisms, and elaborates on how Supercompra handled these relationships. It is chronologically situated in March 2006, the moment when Supercompra must decide how to proceed regarding its relationship with its low income suppliers: 1) allow relations with small Pallatanga growers to dwindle away, discontinuing further efforts and resources invested in organizing them, and dedicating efforts entirely to building relationships with local middlemen and larger commercial farmers; 2) continue to work on the relationship with small growers, but reframe it as a social or CSR initiative; or, 3) allocate more efforts and financial resources to building stable and solid business relationships with small producers, which would imply making a major investment, and dedicating additional time and effort organizing and fostering small farmers with the hope of achieving profitable commercial relations with them within a few years.

  • Greylock Partners

In 1965 William Elfers left Georges Doriot's American Research and Development Corporation to found Greylock, his own venture capital firm. Over the ensuing three decades followed a series of eight Greylock partnerships, during which time Elfers never lost a general partner or saw a colleague leave to start his own venture capital firm. Furthermore, each of the investors in Greylock's first fund participated in all succeeding partnerships. Elfers was among the first to pioneer the limited partnership structure of the modern venture capital firm with Greylock being organized as a series of limited partnerships, each of which pooled the investment capital that its general partners and limited partners committed for finite lifetimes. Greylock was established against a long historical tradition of New England financial innovation going back to at least the nineteenth century. In essence Elfers helped to create a new organizational approach to venture capital through mechanisms that deeply reflected New England's financial investment culture.

  • The Perfect Storm: What Happens When the Market Moves Four Standard Deviations?

Adam Carter was the portfolio manager for Tate Modern Finance III, L.P. ("Tate" or the "Fund"), the third in a series of U.S. commercial real estate debt funds sponsored by the London-based Tate Partners. The Fund was capitalized with $700 million of equity commitments, including a $50 million Sponsor commitment. The Fund's objective was to acquire income-producing commercial real estate mortgages at conservative attachment points in the capital structure, leverage these investments modestly, and generate mid-teen, net returns. The return objectives were consistent with prior funds and represented an alternative means of investing in commercial U.S. real estate equity that was felt to be overvalued at the time (2006). In theory, a debt strategy would provide more protection, and be more conservative, than an equity-oriented strategy due to the multiple layers of debt and equity subordination that insulated the Fund's investments.

He is considering multiple ways to find a developer, including hiring a local programmer or making use of a local app-development company; using an outsourcing platform like oDesk; contracting with Dashfire, a friend's company that charges low fees for product development in exchange for equity; or finding and hiring a CTO or technical co-founder. Grinna must weigh issues like cost, speed of development, equity retention, proximity and ease of collaboration, and control of intellectual property. The case further provides an opportunity for discussing the business models of global firms like oDesk and Dashfire.
