  • Operations Management Challenges at Heathrow Airport (Part A)

Airports are complex environments, with decision-making processes divided among numerous authorities, and many stakeholders pursuing their own interests. Based on Normand Boivin's tenure as chief operating officer (COO) of Heathrow Airport between 2011 and 2018, the case addresses various capacity-related issues ranging from customer satisfaction to solutions studied and implemented. Heathrow is Europe's busiest international airport and one of the major hubs of the civil aviation world. Yet Heathrow faces the same challenges as all other major airports in industrialized countries. When Boivin was appointed COO in 2011, the airport's competitive position had been heavily damaged by a reputation for poor customer service. When he stepped down, seven years later, Heathrow found itself once again in an enviable competitive position. The case reviews the steps taken by Boivin to resolve many of the problems it had faced.

  • ZS Associates: Refilling the Pipeline

ZS Associates, a global consultancy, has been hired by the head of marketing at the global pharmaceutical firm Rensselaer to identify a promising strategy to protect and grow Rensselaer's oncology business. Currently, Rensselaer is a large player in the market, but its intention is to grow this business into the "largest" in the industry within the next decade. Combined with this long-term ambition, Rensselaer faces the acute, near-term worry that one of its key products (generating almost one-fifth of sales) is facing patent expiration. Anna Schumacher is charged with presenting a recommendation to Rensselaer. She has identified several promising drug candidates (assets) that Rensselaer could pursue in its project-development portfolio. Now she must decide which of the assets Rensselaer should prioritize, given the firm's current strategy and objectives and the competing interests of several departments within the company. This disguised field-based case is taught at Darden in the second-year MBA elective "Managing Innovation." It can also be adapted for courses on new product development, core strategy, and project/program management. The case is also suitable for Executive MBA and Executive Education audiences, which are likely to have experienced portfolio decision-making. Given its content and context, it can also be particularly applicable for audiences in the consulting industry or with a background in the pharmaceutical industry or biological sciences.

  • The Business Valuation (A)

This case set is part of the Giving Voice to Values (GVV) curriculum. To see other material in the GVV curriculum, please visit http://store.darden.virginia.edu/giving-voice-to-values. Isabel is a young, recently graduated finance professional who works for ABC Group, a small investment bank. Due in part to high staff turnover, she has recently been promoted to senior financial analyst, and her first important independent project is a business valuation for a five-star hotel out of town; ABC Group would intermediate the hotel's sale. At a business trip where she gets to know the hotel and gathers all the data necessary to do the valuation, she also discovers that the hotel sale might be connected to money-laundering activities. Back in her office, right after finishing the valuation, she receives a call from her boss asking her to manipulate the figures to obtain a much higher offer price. This request goes against Isabel's personal and professional values of honesty, truthfulness, and fairness, and it seems to confirm her suspicions of money laundering. This A case asks students to step into Isabel's shoes and figure out a feasible action plan that is consistent with her values. This case set is targeted at undergraduate students taking finance, leadership, or ethics courses.

As one of the leading property developers in Hong Kong, NWD has developed its connected business ecosystem, covering property development and investment, retailing, transportation, infrastructure development, health care, insurance, and logistics. With "creating shared value" as its corporate vision, NWD wants to achieve business sustainability by both bringing significant returns to shareholders and responding to the community and stakeholders' different needs. Impact Kommons was designed to facilitate business integration between the start-ups and NWD's business units with the aim of developing innovative solutions to solve NWD's clearly defined problems and achieve the relevant sustainable development goals of the UNSDGs. • New World Build for Good: Seeking Innovative Solutions for Affordable Housing in Hong Kong

New World Development (NWD) is a leading property developer in Hong Kong seeking innovative ways to solve Hong Kong's deep-rooted housing problems. NWD has gotten involved in several social housing projects to create shared value with the community, but NWD considers that these projects are not groundbreaking and innovative enough. To better tackle the housing problems, NWD has developed a not-for-profit organization, New World Build for Good, to bring in experts from different industries and policy areas to find more innovative solutions to solve Hong Kong's housing crisis. To facilitate students' discussions on possible innovative solutions, this case gives a comprehensive background of the housing industry in Hong Kong, such as its terrain restrictions and history. The case illustrates how the private and public housing markets work in Hong Kong, showing the housing challenges that young people, the "sandwich" class, and the elderly face. To give students a full picture of the housing challenges in Hong Kong, the case also reviews the government measures to tackle the housing issues over the past two decades. Moreover, the case also outlines the new proposals considered by New World Build for Good, which will inspire students to think of more innovative solutions. This case provides an opportunity for students to learn about the concept and process of social innovation, especially to understand the complications of social problems, identify the sources of innovation, and formulate innovative solutions. The case helps to raise students' awareness of ESG issues, especially in improving people's living conditions and quality of life. After studying this case, students will learn to identify potential areas for improvement, make innovative suggestions, and evaluate projects' feasibility.

Marriott is the second largest hospitality player in terms of market share in Singapore, with AccorHotels Group holding market leadership. In 2016, Marriott merged with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, valued at US$12.2 billion, making it the largest hotel chain in the world. Marriott has also channelled efforts toward digitalisation and innovation, and is one of the pioneers in deploying guest-facing technologies such as keyless entries and smart rooms. This seamless and convenient alternative sought to meet the needs of tech-savvy Chinese travellers, who are receptive to technology powered by facial recognition.

  • Sweet Teez Bakery: Projecting the Dough's Rise

In 2021, the HBS Impact Investment Fund student team met with entrepreneur Teresa Maynard, who had applied for a $25,000 impact investment loan. The students thought the former Harvard Data Scientist's bakery business, Sweet Teez Bakery, showed promise. Maynard had bootstrapped the business, growing it from a small-scale venture to a point where she now considered expanding her corporate clientele and possibly opening a brick-and-mortar location. Alas, funding for such small businesses had been sparse, and Maynard needed working capital to take her business to the next level. The student team was eager to evaluate her financials and submit a recommendation to the investment committee. However, Maynard had taken meticulous records of her financial transactions but had yet to compile them into comprehensive financial statements, meaning that Sweet Teez's financial health was difficult to parse. The HBS student team wondered: How could they best build a reliable financial model from the currently fragmented historical information?

  • Balance Sheets: What Is and What If?

Leslie Castle, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and accounting firm partner, finds herself in a reflective mode, recollecting several previous conversations with several nonaccountants that had questioned some core contemporary financial reporting practices pertaining to balance sheets. In particular, she had been challenged to consider that balance sheets and their related disclosures should: •move from acquired-only to acquired and internally created intangible assets; •move from financial-only to financial and nonfinancial measures; •move from many acceptable accounting method choices to fewer acceptable accounting method choices; •move from single-measure numbers to ranges, probabilities, and sensitivity analyses; and •move from articulated to nonarticulated balance sheets and income statements. The case provides an opportunity for reimagining some of accounting's traditional balance sheet conventions and related disclosures. The two questions posed in the case title undergird the case tasks for student pursuit and are in part the foundational questions posed in the general process of design thinking, an appropriate mindset for discussing this case.

  • Shopee's short-lived venture into India: Market entry and exit amid environmental uncertainty

Shopee has become the largest e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia as of early 2022. Led by CEO Chris Feng, Shopee began its expansion beyond the region to the Americas, Europe and India. India is expected to surpass the U.S. to become the second largest e-commerce market in the world by the 2030s. Shopee entered the Indian market in mid-2021 to harness the opportunities stemming from favourable technological, socio-cultural, political and economic environments. Shopee consistently deployed its resources and capabilities from its playbook of strengths to catch up with incumbents such as Amazon India, Walmart-owned Flipkart, Tata Group and Reliance Industries. However, Shopee faced severe challenges - logistical issues, consumer distrust arising from rampant e-commerce fraud, difficult transition to digital payments, cut-throat competition, suspicions over its indirect ownership structure for market entry, resistance from local retailers and a tough legal and geopolitical landscape. CEO Chris Feng had had a tough choice to make - whether to stay or to go. Just months after entering India, Shopee announced in March 2022 that it would be closing its Indian operations. This case shed light on the trade-offs of this market exit and offers insights into international expansion to emerging markets amid environmental uncertainty.

Although the business scored highly on BII's criteria for investment, Piñeiro and her colleagues had to reevaluate its risk profile in light of the additional debt. They also had to decide how to manage their relationship with the entrepreneur. The BII team determined an entrepreneur's creditworthiness through a series of in-depth conversations rather than using a one-size-fits-all application form. They also did not perform criminal background checks or credit checks. Nevertheless, they were disappointed that the entrepreneur had not disclosed his previous debt, and wondered why he had failed to bring it up in their previous conversations. At the conclusion of the case, Piñeiro and her team must decide whether to move forward with the investment and if so, how to address the issue with the entrepreneur.
