  • Schulich School of Medicine: Enhancing and Developing a High-Performance Culture

The newly appointed chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (department) at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry was thinking about how she would approach the next five years in her new role. The chair thought about two of the important issues she would face: building a cohesive department and nurturing a high performance culture. She became chair at a time when direction was needed. The department had formed in June 2002 as a result of the merger between the Department of Physiology and the small Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology. While the merger had gone well, the chair still sensed that some faculty members in Pharmacology felt as if their department had been taken over by Physiology. At present, it was sometimes difficult to assess performance between faculty members due to differences in workload composition and a lack of documentation. The current thinking was that the department had to move towards adopting best practices in their processes. The chair wanted to look at the issue from a broader perspective. She wondered how the issue could be best framed and what a potential solution might look like.

  • Schulich School of Medicine: Opportunities Through Alternative Career Models

Dr. Michael Lehman was the newly appointed external chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology (the department) at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He had been brought in specifically to address the consistent underperformance of the department. Department members had divided into two camps - clinical teaching and research - and open conflict existed between members with the result that the clinical anatomy division was considering leaving the faculty. Another area of concern involved the declining research output by the cell biology division; many research programs had stalled, resulting in the loss of external funding. Lehman wondered how to balance competing interests and incentives with his five-year plan. His overall strategy was three-fold: keep the department together; enable faculty to generate scholarly research; and rejuvenate research activities. From a change-management perspective, Lehman wanted to identify his key challenges and develop a plan of action for each issue. He thought about how to implement change in his new department.

  • Tom Baker Cancer Centre

  • Deloitte: on Livent Inc.

In December 1997, an audit partner at Deloitte was required to render an opinion on five separate but related issues arising out of an on-going working relationship with Livent, a Canadian live entertainment firm. Each issue could be treated in multiple ways, and there seemed to be no immediate clear-cut resolution to each. Issues included: assessing impacts of side agreements between Livent and a real-estate development firm; appropriateness of booking revenues for theatre-naming rights in a particular fiscal quarter; auditing of pre-production costs; accounting for proceeds of sale of receivables to related party; and evaluating the audit of accounts payable. It was crucial to resolve each of the issues within a few days in order to complete the file to meet filing requirements. The auditor must determine the best advice for each issue while understanding that Deloitte had to protect its reputation, yet still grow its revenues in the face of aggressive competition for its business.

  • British Petroleum (PLC) and John Browne: A Culture of Risk Beyond Petroleum (A)

The year 2007 had to have been one of the worst in the history of British Petroleum plc (BP). In the span of four months, two separate independent reports (the first one commissioned by BP itself) had identified a deeply rooted culture of risk within BP where money and profits were valued above worker and environmental safety. These reports were in response to an explosion in 2005 at an oil refinery in Texas City, in the United States, which killed 15 people and injured more than 180, but the reports also referred to pipeline leaks in Alaska as well as other serious safety lapses throughout BP's global operations. The Texas City explosion was the worst but not the first major incident at a BP facility, and the revelations in the reports severely damaged the credibility the so-called super-major oil company had earned over the last decade. The job of restoring investor and stakeholder confidence as well as the firm's reputation fell to the BP board and its star group chief executive, Lord John Browne. The B case, product 9B08M003, examines the role played by the board with respect to the personal integrity of Lord Browne. The teaching objectives are to introduce students to examining the role of the board with respect to risk management as well as its social responsibilities to various stakeholders.
