  • Copenhagen Airports A/S: Innovation in Flight Mode?

Copenhagen Airports A/S (CPH) has been severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with flight activity at levels not seen since the 1970s. Although the virus overshadows everything, three senior managers discuss a more long-term trend: the steadily declining revenues of the airport’s shopping mall. Over the past number of years, consumer interest in food, beverages, and tax-free items has continuously decreased, posing considerable challenges to CPH’s business model. About 80 per cent of the airport’s profits are generated by the non-aeronautical business, of which the shopping mall is the biggest part, and CPH needs that income to continue investing into the airport’s status as an important hub for airlines. What could CPH do to deliver better existing services, and what new services would merit serious consideration? Could CPH launch new products or services that would be attractive to both passengers and shopping mall tenants, or would it need to redevelop its entire business model? Since the commercial business was key to driving the airport’s further development, the managers knew that finding answers to these questions was important to sustaining CPH’s position as a leading hub in Northern Europe. The case is not about the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications for the aviation industry. This is a case about the long-term trend of declining revenues in the airport’s shopping mall.

  • Central Electronics Limited (A)

CEL was a loss-making Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) with many problems of discipline, operational inefficiencies, aggressive unions, skill gaps and high employee cost. The past restructuring of the company has not led to performance improvement. At the time, CEL had already eroded its net worth by nearly 90% and was merely INR 66 Million as against a paid-up capital of INR 558 Million. A glance at its balance sheet showed a large number of qualifications reflecting the health of systems in the company. CEL was established in the year 1974 as a Central Public Sector Enterprise, under the Ministry of Science & Technology, with an objective to commercialise technologies developed by National Laboratories and Research & Development Institutions in the country. In subsequent years, it had taken up the manufacturing of a wide range of products in collaboration with various labs & institutions. CEL initially started off with manufacturing of Ferrites as its primary business. Soon afterwards, it started its two key business verticals, Solar Photovoltaics (PV) and Railway Signalling systems. CEL is credited with pioneering the growth of Solar PV in India and holds the distinction of manufacturing India's First Solar Cell in 1977 and India's First Solar Panel in 1978. Later in 1991-92, CEL supplied and installed India's first Solar Power Plants (two 100 KW power plants in Aligarh and Ghosi Districts). These plants started operations in 1993. CEL had entered into the field of Solar PV in an era when the technology was largely limited to the domain of space research and there were only a handful of organisations in the field, even globally. CEL was the fourth largest manufacturer of solar modules in the world in late 1980s. CEL has played a pioneering role in a number of other areas as well, including development of Piezo elements for various applications-Ferrite based Phase Control Modules for Radar Arrays, Cadmium Zinc Telluride Substrates for night vision devices, etc.

  • Historic Lund Resort at Kla ah men: Building Sales and Hiring Appropriate Management

The historic Lund Resort at Kla ah men (the Resort) was wholly owned by the Tla’amin Nation and operated by Tla’amin Management Services LP (TMS). The Tla’amin Final Agreement had been in effect since April 2016, making the Tla’amin Nation self-governing over its land, resources, and members. The Resort, on British Columbia (BC)’s Sunshine Coast, featured thirty-one renovated guest rooms that ranged from budget-friendly units to luxury ocean-front suites. In addition to hiring a new general manager, the Resort needed to increase bookings in the shoulder season and stabilize staffing. By 2018, the Resort had had six general managers in two years and needed a highly experienced professional to fill the position. TMS hoped to retain this person for at least three years. The new manager would need to be a good fit in terms of Tla’amin culture and values; given the complex reporting structure, they would need to be adaptive and willing to work with multiple people within the Tla’amin leadership, including the TMS board of directors and the Tla’amin operating board. While it would have been best to hire a manager with experience working with Indigenous communities, the TMS had determined that this was not feasible and that it was best to hire someone who was experienced and open to learning about Tla’amin culture and values.

  • FIFA and The World Cup: The Future of Football

Should FIFA host its biggest event-the FIFA World Cup-every two years instead of every four, as it has been doing since the event's inception in the 1930s? In September 2021, Gianni Infantino, the president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), addresses representatives of the 211 national associations that are members of football's highest-level governing body, from a conference room in FIFA's headquarters in Switzerland. News of the planned reforms already have sent shockwaves through the world of football. For instance, the president of football's European confederation, UEFA, has referred to a biennial World Cup as a "killer" and vowed to boycott the idea. The president of the Spanish league, one of football's top three domestic leagues, has dismissed the plans as "a threat not just to domestic football leagues but to the overall tradition of world football." Are the proposed reforms-all part of a 'Future of Football' project designed to reshape the sport-the right bet for FIFA? And if so, what can the governing body do to guide the process along the right path?
