In 2019, Paratent Event Rentals Ltd. was facing the possibility of year end net losses. • Balance Sheets: What Is and What If?

Leslie Castle, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and accounting firm partner, finds herself in a reflective mode, recollecting several previous conversations with several nonaccountants that had questioned some core contemporary financial reporting practices pertaining to balance sheets. In particular, she had been challenged to consider that balance sheets and their related disclosures should: •move from acquired-only to acquired and internally created intangible assets; •move from financial-only to financial and nonfinancial measures; •move from many acceptable accounting method choices to fewer acceptable accounting method choices; •move from single-measure numbers to ranges, probabilities, and sensitivity analyses; and •move from articulated to nonarticulated balance sheets and income statements. The case provides an opportunity for reimagining some of accounting's traditional balance sheet conventions and related disclosures. The two questions posed in the case title undergird the case tasks for student pursuit and are in part the foundational questions posed in the general process of design thinking, an appropriate mindset for discussing this case.

  • Betting on DraftKings

ARK Investment Management LLC (ARK)’s Next Generation Internet ETF (exchange traded fund) accumulated over 5 per cent of the outstanding shares of DraftKings Inc. (DraftKings), which held 24 per cent of the emerging US online sports betting market. Following the legalization of sports betting in May 2018, DraftKings faced escalating competition as competitors spent heavily on advertising and promotions to attract customers. This spending led to increasing quarterly operating losses, and DraftKings’ stock fell about 75 per cent below its fifty-two-week high. ARK needed to re-evaluate its investment to understand whether the stock market’s recent revaluation was a warning sign regarding DraftKings’ ability to weather the competition or just a new opportunity to buy more of an undervalued stock.

  • HUTCHMED: Accounting for Revenue Recognition in a Biopharmaceutical Company

This case explores the accounting treatment of revenue recognition for a biopharmaceutical company in the life sciences sector, HUTCHMED (China) Limited (HCM, HKEx: 13, NASDAQ: HCM). As a subsidiary of CK Hutchison Holdings Limited (CK Hutchison, HKEx: 1), HCM operated to discover, develop, and commercialize "targeted therapies" and "immunotherapies" for the treatment of patients with cancer and immunological diseases. Founded in 2000, HCM was initially a pioneer in discovering drugs aimed at creating novel therapies in China. Over the past fifteen years, HCM had created numerous drug candidates. These successes in discovering drugs had led to some collaborations with leading global pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca and Eli Lilly. Due to the business model of life science companies, commonly with the extensive use of license and collaborative arrangements with external parties, the accounting for revenue is particularly complex. Through the case, students will grapple with some practical questions. For instance, what were those specific traits as in HCM's business model? Upon identification of the traits, students will be asked about how each of these traits had impacted HCM's accounting policy on revenue recognition. In addition, what were the financial implications attributable to such accounting policy as adopted by HCM?

  • Schmoozers, not snoozers: Busting the Kevin and Angela stereotypes in public accounting

In contrast to the well-known stereotype of the boring, unsociable accountant, today's public accounting professionals argue that they are boundary spanners. Working at the intersection of the firm/client interface, these professionals contend that sociability is a requisite skill for routinely navigating the many interactions they have with multiple personnel at client organizations. This research aims to address this disconnect and to confront whether the public perception is warranted. Using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue), we assess the sociability of 176 public accounting professionals and discover that, contrary to the stereotype, male public accountants are more sociable than males in the general population. Our analysis also demonstrates that female public accountants are no more or less sociable than females in the general population. Additional analysis shows that while male public accountants are more sociable than female public accountants, this effect is attributable to differences at lower levels of the profession and that male-female differences disappear when comparing male managers and partners to female managers and partners. Given the importance of sociability in public accounting, this research offers recruiting strategies that will help to dispel the myth of the unsociable accountant and provides training tips for enhancing sociability within the ranks.

  • Financial Measurements

Measurements tend to be consistent and translatable across countries, cultures, and languages. If an object's length is measured in feet in the United States, the measurement will need to be converted to meters for those in the United Kingdom to understand. The physical length stays exactly the same; the description of it is what differs. Time, temperature, weight, and distance are all other measurements that are consistent no matter the place and that simply have to be translated. However, value is a measurement that can vary widely within a single country and between countries. Costs and selling prices fluctuate for a number of reasons, which can result in problems when measuring in the same currency, and it's difficult to create an international standard for how to calculate cost. This text examines financial transactions where accounting rules have tried to solve this inconsistency problem and outlines global differences generally and on a country-specific level. Chapter 1 provides an overview of financial measurements, the use of financial transaction information, and historical issues in identifying and recording business transactions; for instance, there were challenges with the various methods of recording business transactions until double-entry bookkeeping was invented. Several concepts are introduced that accountants now use to ensure the information they generate is valid and consistent, including the accruals concept and the going concern concept. A discussion is also offered about whether or not accountants should follow strict rules in their work or if it's more useful to simply apply basic principles; legal and political issues are briefly explored. Inflation causes even more difficulties in identifying, measuring, and recording financial transactions.

Chapter 2 looks at the early business developments that indicated a need for a consistent international approach to setting accounting standards, covering the early 1700s to the 1990s. International differences within legal systems, tax systems, stock exchanges, and regulations are outlined. The development of International Accounting Standards (IASs) is summarized as well as how various countries have adopted IASs. The current International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) is also described, including the process of creating a standard and the IASB's structure and operation. The IASB has identified several financial statements that companies should provide in their annual reports and accounts; the statement of financial position, or balance sheet, is described in detail. The Conceptual Framework, inflation, and the problems they pose are also discussed.

Chapter 3 focuses on the United States, first discussing the accounting standard setting process of the country and the roles of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). There have been several attempts to converge Untied States standards with the International Accounting Standards (IASs); a discussion of various stages of the relationship between the United States and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) is offered. The current practices of the United States and how they differ from the international approach are described, and the role of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) in the financial world is explored.

Chapter 4 explores the Islamic religion, Islamic law (Sharia), and how they affect accounting in Muslim countries. Islamic financial institutions have grown vastly in the past few decades; however, international accounting-specifically International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs)-differ from Islamic accounting. Zakat (charitable donation) is offered as an example of a distinction and conflict between Islamic accounting and IFRS. A brief history and description of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) is provided as well as an outline of accounting standards in several Muslim countries. Accounting concepts and assumptions in Islamic accounting are described, including the entity concept, money measurement, and conservatism. Interest is prohibited by Sharia law, so Islamic institutions use different modes of borrowings and investments to meet financing needs.

Chapter 5 discusses developments that are changing corporate reporting. Rather than focusing solely on financial reporting to shareholders, companies are now paying attention to various interests in corporate activities. Some specific pressures have led to corporate reporting changes, such as giving financial information to employees. Changes in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Islamic countries are described. There are many countries that don't set financial reporting standards anymore, but developments in international regulations are considered, including the establishment of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). Technology has also influenced corporate reporting, especially eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). The Integrated Reporting Model and sustainability accounting and reporting are also explored.
