Monde Nissin Corporation: IPO Luck in The Philippines
In May 2021, a recent MBA graduate and retail investor, read an announcement about Monde Nissin Corporation launching an initial public offering of 3.6 billion shares at ₱13.50 per share. The company expected to raise ₱48.6 billion in the largest common share offering ever in the Philippines, while the country was still in the middle of a COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. However, economic and stock market conditions were expected to improve after the availability of vaccines and anticipated end of the lockdown. The investor planned to run a discounted cash flow valuation and comparable multiples analysis of Monde Nissin Corporation to determine if he should invest in the initial public offering. He also wanted to assess the attractiveness of the food industry and the merits of investing in the company, which was the market leader in all of its product categories. -

Aboitiz Power Corporation: Cost of Capital During the Pandemic
In January 2021, an equity analyst in the Student Managed Investment Fund of the Asian Institute of Management was trying to estimate the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) of Aboitiz Power Corporation (AP) based on the capital asset pricing model. The WACC estimate would be part of her discounted cash flow valuation, which would then help her determine whether or not the fund should invest in Aboitiz Power Corporation. AP was a leading power generation and distribution company in the Philippines with ₱81.1 billion in revenues over the nine-month period ended September 2020. The Philippines was in the middle of a lockdown related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while the stock market was showing signs of recovery, the analyst was worried that record low interest rates might exert unwarranted downward pressure on her WACC estimate and artificially raise her discounted cash flow valuation of AP. The company's WACC had decreased from 2019 to 2020, reflecting a lower risk-free rate, lower borrowing rate, lower stock price, and resulting weight of equity. The analyst needed to explore potential adjustments to normalize the WACC away from pandemic conditions in order to confirm her recommendation regarding investing in AP stock. -

HDFC Life: Free Cash Flow Valuation
In June 2022, two MBA students from a post-secondary institution in India were asked by their professor to build a valuation model for HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited to assess the company’s stock price for investors. The students understood the importance of the task and tracked the company’s historic stock price. They found that its share price dropped considerably in 2021, as the company’s profits decreased due to a high number of claims during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, however, the company witnessed a rise in profits mainly due to a high number of premiums, as fears from COVID-19 infections led more people to buy insurance coverage. Given that the company’s profits and performance had been fluctuating, the students wanted to know whether the stock was undervalued, overvalued, or fairly priced. Their task was to determine the ideal stock price and whether to recommend the stock to investors. -

Corporate venturing with Hilti
Companies need to find a compelling growth strategy and can pursue several options. They can grow internally via organic means, they can grow through mergers and acquisitions, or they can use various venturing tools such as corporate venture capital, partnering with ventures groups, or hybrid models. All of these involve tradeoffs, and the success of any particular strategy depends on external factors as well as a firm's organizational design. When looking at corporate venturing options, there is no "right" or "wrong" option, and strategic choices will need to be considered in light of internal and external factors. Hilti is a large established legacy company, active worldwide. It has traditionally grown its hardware business via organic growth and internal development. Over the past 10-15 years Hilti has increased its enterprise value, mainly by internal growth and by improving and optimizing financial controls and resource allocation. At the same time Hilti, began a process to use other corporate venturing strategies and to increase the share of turnover earned from software - as opposed to hardware - lines of business. -
