  • Leading with Heart: How to Unlock Creativity, Purpose and Results

There can be no arguing that we are in the midst of a leadership crisis. And not just in politics but in the business world, as well. We know this first and foremost because people aren't excited about their work: According to Gallup, two in three are not involved in or enthusiastic about their work, and 50 per cent are actively looking for a new job. The authors present their finding that great leaders possess five core characteristics that help them "connect at an authentic human level with people". Taken together, these characteristics constitute 'leading with heart'. As they demonstrate, leading with heart isn't just about being chummy with your employees or making people feel good. It's about creating an environment of safety and connection versus one of fear and isolation.

  • "The Best" FIFA Football Awards 2019: Who is the Best Men's Coach in the World?

In August 2019, Paraguayan sports journalist Edgar Cantero, correspondent for various international media outlets and digital channels specializing in football (soccer in the US), wondered which of the world's football coaches was most qualified to receive 'The Best' award, granted annually by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in various representative categories (coaches, players, goals etc.). FIFA had 209 affiliated national associations in 2019, so its annual awards were an event of global interest. The voting system was designed to ensure votes were as impartial and transparent as possible, with the way in which each participant voted later being made public on the FIFA website. The final three nominees were generally somewhat predictable, however, usually based on the winners of the world's most prestigious footballing trophies the previous year. Cantero was surprised and honored to be invited to represent Paraguay for the first time in the voting. In an industry where several professional generations with long careers co-exist, Cantero was part of a new generation of younger journalists, all in their early thirties, who were beginning to receive recognition in various countries for their coverage of major international tournaments, such as the World Cup in Russia 2018 and the 2019 Copa America. Cantero was pleased generational diversity was being considered, as it was a topic that generated passionate debate. He only had a couple of weeks to make his decision and cast his vote, although he did favor four of the top ten candidates in particular: Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool FC coach), Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham Hotspur) and Erik ten Hag (AFC Ajax). Cantero and his colleagues were aware of the media importance of the FIFA awards, which is why their decision was far from an obvious one.

  • Data Analytics and the Overall Research Process

In many cases, data analysts are given the question to answer or the data set to be analyzed. It's important, however, to understand that there are numerous steps, before and after the empirical analysis is done, that define an overall rigorous scientific process. This note outlines the basic steps that are important in asking an empirical research question, answering it, and presenting findings. The process described in the note generalizes to any empirical research domain. Given the rising prominence of data analytics in sports, we illustrate the process here using a question that is often discussed by basketball observers: Does calling a timeout in basketball end a run being made by the opposing team? At Darden, this note is used in the MBA and Executive MBA class "Data Analytics and Leadership Judgment in Sports"; it would also be suitable in many data analytics courses or a module in any course introducing the basics of an empirical research process.

  • Leader Action Orientations

Leaders are responsible for planning and executing actions that advance organizational goals. As individuals gain career experience, they tend to develop and rely on implicit mental models that shape how they go about "getting things done." Without knowing it, most people develop a primary action orientation - analytical, contextual, or relational - that informs their mental map for action. Action orientations can be useful because they inform how you develop a plan, determine where to focus your time and attention, and when to enlist the help of others. However, an overreliance on any one orientation can lead to poor action plans that may derail your ability to execute (especially when operating in a new role or an unfamiliar situation).

  • Chinese Online 2018-2020: Turnaround

Chinese Online (COL) was one of China's largest Chinese-language digital content distributor. Its offerings ranged from literature, audio, TV, film, and micro-drama. From 2018 to 2020, the company was in serious financial trouble as a result of an unwise acquisition. The founder of COL returned from overseas to turnaround the company by executing a strategic refocus to its core business field, which was literature and other forms of content. In addition to business contraction and cost reduction, he creatively designed a collective decision-making system called Class Committee, where he encouraged divisional heads to break the ice and make decisions together. This mechanism aligned divisional goals and allowed for executives to understand COL's business lines from a more integral perspective. • FINRA (A): Moving Financial Regulation to the Cloud

In July 2013, the chief information officer of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) was preparing for an upcoming meeting with FINRA's board of directors. He was building an argument for why the organization should reverse the decision he had advocated just a few months earlier and shift from a model that used on-premises data centres to one that focused on public cloud resources. Some board members were already familiar with the cloud and were using it in their own organizations, whereas others were concerned about taking their most critical data and putting it into the hands of a cloud service provider. This decision would have a profound impact on the technical direction of the regulator moving forward. Choosing to abandon their on-premises resources and shift to the cloud was a fundamental architectural decision that would significantly affect job roles and be difficult to reverse. The chief information officer had to make the case that a cloud-focused approach would meet FINRA's current needs and serve the organization better in the long term.

  • Li Fen: The Plight of an HR Manager

This case describes the plight of Li Fen, a human resources (HR) manager. In 2008, Li began working as a management trainee at Company A, a smartphone manufacturer. After landing a formal job at the company, she handled HR and administrative tasks for a new project and a big company project that had encountered some difficulties. She handled both projects effectively due to her self-discipline and strong work ethic. Nevertheless, she found it difficult to get along well with her colleagues, including superiors, peers, and subordinates, who frequently complained about her, and they even got into heated arguments. She had never considered that interpersonal relationships could get in the way of her work. Disheartened, she returned to company headquarters to enhance her professional skillset. However, would better professional skills alone help her deal with these interpersonal issues? People often joked that Li had low emotional intelligence (EQ), but she could never quite put her finger on the problem. In the past, she had believed that work was just about getting things done and that managers should not preoccupy themselves with other people's emotions or show empathy to others. Now, however, she began to question this assumption: Could it be that EQ was actually critical in the workplace, and in that case, how could she improve her EQ to forge stronger interpersonal relationships?
