  • Dubai: Debt, Development, and Crisis (B)

On November 25, 2009, the city state of Dubai stunned markets by announcing that Dubai World, its flagship state holding company, would seek a six month "standstill" on at least $4 billion U.S. dollars of its $26 billion in debt obligations. This case describes Dubai's development strategy in detail and narrates how, as part of that strategy, a series of state-owned holding companies accumulated billions of dollars in debt. The A case ends as Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chairman of Dubai's Fiscal Committee, has to decide what to do about the financial troubles of Dubai World and other state-owned holding companies. The case presents Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed having to decide among three options: The Dubai government can guarantee the debt, they can renegotiate the debt, or walk away (i.e., default). The B case describes the decision and the reactions to this decision around the world and presents a new decision on the part of bond holders of Dubai's state-owned holding companies. The C case briefly analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of Dubai's bankruptcy procedures, both for investors and for the holding companies of Dubai.

  • Foxconn V BYD (B): Strategic Approach to Intellectual Property Management in Emerging Markets

In May 2006, Foxconn International Holdings first discovered a trade secret leakage to BYD Company Limited through current and former employees. Despite successful conviction of four individuals involved, prosecutors dropped all criminal charges against BYD in December 2008. Around 400 senior managers and engineers have left Foxconn for BYD since 2003, posing continuous threats of further infringement of intellectual property ("IP") rights. In response to a deep global recession since late 2008, one of Foxconn's strategies has been to increase investments in research on and production of smartphones, which maintain strong demand relative to traditional mobile phones. Because Foxconn's factories are located mainly in emerging markets with high IP risks, the success of this strategy is being threatened by ineffective IP protection. It is imperative for the company to revisit its IP management strategies, not only to protect its research and development investment but also to generate extra revenue for survival. It also has to devise an appropriate litigation strategy against BYD.

  • Breeden Electronics (B)

This case builds on the A case (UV1730). Marlene Baer, the controller of Breeden Electronics, recognizes that grouping all manufacturing overhead costs together and allocating them to Breeden's two products is not very accurate. She groups overhead costs by activity and then allocates them to the two products. The system resembles a simple activity-based-costing system. This is the second in a series of three cases that can be used to explore the evolution of cost systems. The main issues of the three cases are as follows: in the A case, the company uses a traditional costing system. The main questions relate to breakeven analysis and the effect of inventory buildup on profit. The B case introduces the definition of activities, costing those activities, and computing product cost based on their use of the activities. The revised product costs are not dramatically different, but analyzing what causes the differences is important to discovering where ABC can provide valuable information. The C case (UV1734) takes place after the end of the year, when profits have been reduced by the need to take care of a growing and increasingly complex packing and shipping activity. The controller defines a new activity (order handling), computes the cost per order, and begins to revise the data on product profitability and to develop new data on customer profitability. Having discovered the high cost of handling each order, the controller now has good reason to work on activity-based management: making that process more efficient, and perhaps more customer friendly. The three cases can be used in three classes, or the A and B cases together in one class and the C case in a second class.
