He must develop a complete marketing and financial proposal. The case focuses on decisions about channels, flavors, pack-types, pack-sizes, retail pricing, trade and company margins, forecast market outcomes and forecast cash flows. A small manufacturing company has purchased an innovative and complex new machine. The equipment is for a vital part of the manufacturing process. Despite the concerted efforts of the equipment maker and the company's production and manufacturing staffs, the new machine fails to achieve the promised output. The purchase of this equipment was supposed to be the first step in a move toward advanced manufacturing techniques. The vice-president, production, must decide whether to continue to attempt to get the equipment running well or to exercise his option of returning the system and getting back the purchase price plus a penalty fee.

Mr. Panetta, owner of Cosmo's Restaurants Limited is trying to make some important decisions on the future of his family business. Panetta has the options of not growing, growing by opening a third drive-in/takeout restaurant or by manufacturing and marketing the restaurant's best selling product, the Cosmobob. Originally an in-house product, the Cosmobob was successfully marketed to local restaurants by Panetta, and the demand for the product has outgrown the restaurant's production facilities. Panetta is determined to make a decision in the best interests of his family.
