  • Confronting Directly and Indirectly: Are You Attuned to Notice?

How we voice our disagreements may say a lot about our cultural influences. Confrontations are not always angry fights; sometimes they happen when there is a need to deliver bad news, or to say no to what another person is asking of you. Many managers ask questions such as "What is the right way to say no to a boss?" "What is the right way to challenge or oppose someone else's opinion?" "What is the right way to deliver criticism to a colleague?" The answer to these questions depends to an extent on the context. And one important element of context is whether the parties are from direct- or indirect-confrontation cultures. This technical note offers insight and research on distinguishing the difference between the two and strategies to pick up on and appropriately interpret expressions of confrontation in a way that allows you to respond effectively.

  • Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply

This note extends the IS/LM model to incorporate changes in the aggregate price level and to permit output to be determined by aggregate supply and demand. The note concludes by reviewing the exogenous components of the IS/LM AD/AS model.

  • The Development of the Markets for Natural, Organic, and Health Foods in the U.S., Module Note

Discourses on the links between eating, health, and social standing in America have deep roots. As mechanisms of food production, distribution and storage were developed in the nineteenth century, Americans began receiving information about what to and not-to eat, from public and religious figures, scientists, government officials, and food companies. In an increasingly industrializing and urbanizing society, such information translated into consumer decisions that had both economic and cultural antecedents and consequences. Even before the growth in the market for organic, health, and gourmet foods in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, food choices were associated with lifestyle.

  • A Brief Introduction to Macroeconomics

This technical note sets the groundwork for a module on macroeconomics by introducing concepts and definitions that will be revisited in subsequent technical notes. The note begins by introducing national income accounting and the components of GDP, and by discussing why economists care about GDP. It then discusses how the determinants of the components of GDP interact on the market, and how we can predict GDP and interest rates through the lens of a model-a framework that maps assumptions into outcomes. The note introduces students to basic economic modeling by walking them through examples of how to determine endogenous variables from systems of equations and exogenous variables. The note concludes by discussing the role of assumptions in macroeconomics and by listing some of the assumptions that we will maintain in subsequent technical notes.

  • The IS/LM Model

This technical note introduces the basic structure of the workhorse IS/LM model for a closed economy (i.e., one that does not engage in international trade). The note derives the core components of the model and derives predictions of effects of fiscal and monetary policy. The price level is assumed to be fixed, and aggregate demand determines output. This note precedes a more comprehensive treatment of aggregate demand and aggregate supply found in subsequent technical notes.

  • Generating Perceptual Maps from Social Media Data

Companies have long struggled to get a handle on how consumers feel about brands and products in real time. Perceptual maps are often use to help visualize a product 's relationship to other products in the competitive arena, but the data referenced to build perceptual maps is often expensive to obtain or incomplete. This case introduces students to a new tool that mines and aggregates social media to support the development of more meaningful perceptual maps.

  • The Structure and Functioning of Art Markets

The production, valuation, and consumption of contemporary art are guided by cultural and economic forces that play out in primary and secondary markets. Artists seek the attention of art dealers, who, along with auction houses, play a large role in determining what is and is not innovative and important-and therefore valuable-in the market. Museums, collectors, and critics also play a significant role in affecting public perception and valuation of works of art, while ancillary service providers such as advisors, insurers, and private wealth management and financial services firms support the workings of the market.

  • Note on Application of Game Theory in Business

Business happens in a network consisting of different firms who have correlations with each other. For example, an automobile manufacturer has many dealers in different locations. There are correlations between the manufacturer and the dealers and correlations among the dealers. Each firm’s decision on matters such as price influences the other firms’ profits. By using the concept of game theory, such a decision can be based on a reasonable rationale. Yet, to apply game theory to real-world problems, we must first understand the “game rules” in business through analyzing horizontal and vertical correlations between firms and how such features as information asymmetry affects the equilibrium solution.

  • Human Resources, Social Media Policies and the Law in Canada

Social media behaviour and online consumer behaviour is different than much of what takes place offline. Though some legal concepts can be transferred, overall, managing human resources from a digital perspective is a new and complex field, and therefore requires additional skills and knowledge. Social media considerably blurs the line between the personal and the professional. It requires thoughtfulness and tact to navigate this new, murky aspect of human resources. The strongest and most effective social media human resource policy approaches will be those that focus above all on values, such as defining and adhering to a particular brand voice, rather than on details, such as exactly how to respond to a particular situation.
