INEOS ChlorVinyls (B): A Positive Vision for PVC
Supplement to case IN1253. When a Greenpeace campaign to boycott PVC products seemed to spell disaster for Hydro Polymers, it embraced the challenge and embarked on a drive for sustainability using The Natural Step framework. The strategy was maintained after Hydro was acquired by INEOS, and ultimately led to significant changes throughout Europe's PVC industry. The case shows how positioning sustainability as a business opportunity rather than a threat can yield substantial commercial success while addressing environmental impacts. PopVote: Assessing the Risk of DDoS (B)
In this series of case studies, students learn to identify, assess, and control the risks of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in a real-world situation. PopVote was the electronic voting system used by the Public Opinion Programme (POP) at the University of Hong Kong. This case study consists of cases A, B, and C. Case B sets the scene for risk control in information security management. To improve cloud-based security, POP outsourced the system security to Amazon Web Services (AWS), CloudFlare, and UDomain. During the mock and preregistration period of the voting event, the scale of DDoS attacks forced AWS and UDomain to make an unusual move and withdraw their services. CloudFlare also warned that it might suspend its service if there was another wave of cyber-attacks. The POP team had to decide immediately what they should do to control the risks. -

ChotuKool (B): Consumer-centric Disruption at the Bottom of the Pyramid
Supplement to case IN1236. With ChotuKool, an innovative cooler, Gopalan Sunderraman, Executive Vice President at Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing and his team were able to profitably address a need of bottom-of-the-pyramid consumers in rural India. Case A presents the challenge and the approach used (in-market research) to identify the need and design a solution. To ensure ChotuKool's go-to-market strategy is a success, G&B must get the finance model and distribution model right. Case B explains how G&B partnered with micro-finance institutions and empowerment initiatives targeting local women to address the finance and distribution model challenges. It also describes the non-financial impact that ChotuKool had on local entrepreneurs and consumers, as well as hinting at future avenues for growth. -
SGFE Cambodia (B): High-energy Char Briquettes for the Bottom of the Pyramid
Supplement to case IN1239. The case tells the story of SGFE Cambodia and its CEO, Carlo Figa Talamanca, in the period 2011-14. Talamanca has the opportunity to take over the struggling SGFE. Created by the NGO GERES to reduce deforestation in Cambodia, SGFE produces and sells char briquettes. They compete with traditional charcoal, which is mainly derived from illegal forest exploitation. Although superior, the briquettes are also more expensive, and are not well known by consumers. The question is how to penetrate the market at low cost, and how to position the products. Another question is whether SGFE can realistically achieve the social and environmental objectives of the company. Case B describes SGFE's subsequent commercial success. Getting the public to know the products was the major hurdle, but now that this step has been achieved, demand exceeds supply. Interestingly, it is the low-income vendors, at the bottom of the pyramid, who are the biggest consumers of this more expensive product. However, the social impact of SGFE is minimal and the deforestation of Cambodia continues. -
The EC Rains on Oracle/Sun (B)
Oracle's proposed acquisition of Sun was on a fast track until the EC's antitrust concerns about open-source MySQL ignited a transatlantic war of words delaying the deal. Sun's performance suffered and its customers were approached by competitors while regulatory objections were debated and tensions rose between U.S. and EC regulators.
