  • Privalia's Internationalization Strategy: How To Enter the German Market, Epilogue

In early 2011, José Manuel Villanueva and Lucas Carné, founders of Privalia, an online fashion discount store, were about to submit to the Board of Directors a strategic plan that could mark the beginning of a new phase in the company's growth. Since its inception in 2006, Privalia had grown at a fast pace: three years later, it was already profitable in Spain and expanded into Italy, Brazil and Mexico. By 2010, it had secured market leadership in every country where it operated. However, the competition grew just as fast, and the experience acquired over recent years indicated that speed and market size proved key in online fashion sales. Privalia already operated in Spain and Italy, but, if it really wanted to become a relevant player in Europe, the company needed to move into the topmost markets like Germany, France or the United Kingdom. Villanueva and Carné decided to strengthen Privalia's international expansion by venturing into the German market. Thus far, Privalia's international growth had unfolded organically, via the creation of affiliates in the countries where it had moved into (Italy, Brazil and Mexico). Now, in order to enter the German market, should Privalia set up a subsidiary or should it acquire Dress-for-Less that was up and running in a leading local market position? Villanueva and Carné did not have much time. A board meeting had been scheduled to make a final decision. They needed to design a clear growth strategy, evaluate their options and prepare an entry proposal for Germany.

  • Fears and Realities: Managing Ebola in Dallas Epilogue

This epilogue accompanies case number KS1160. In September 2014, as several West African countries continued to battle a deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus, Dallas, Texas emerged as ground zero for the disease in the U.S. This case recounts how, over the course of three days, Thomas Eric Duncan, who had recently arrived in the city from Liberia, reported twice to Dallas Presbyterian Hospital exhibiting signs of illness. Having sent him home after his first visit, the hospital admitted him after his second; and with his symptoms worsening rapidly, tests soon revealed everyone's worst fear: he had Ebola. "Fears and Realities" describes how local, state, and federal public health authorities, along with elected officials and hospital administrators, responded to the alarming news - a hugely difficult task made all the more challenging by confusion over Duncan's background and travel history, and, eventually, by the intense focus and considerable concern on the part of the media and public at large. Efforts to curtail the spread of the disease were further complicated when two nurses who had cared for Duncan also tested positive for Ebola, even though they apparently had followed CDC protocols when interacting with him. With three confirmed cases of the disease in Dallas - each patient with their own network of contacts - authorities scrambled to understand what was happening and to figure out a way to bring the crisis to an end before more people were exposed to the highly virulent disease. Case number KS1161.

  • Pricing Carbon: The Birth of British Columbia's Carbon Tax (Sequel)

This sequel accompanies case KS1170. In 2008, British Columbia became one of the few jurisdictions in the world to successfully implement a comprehensive carbon tax. The architect of the tax, Premier Gordon Campbell, championed the broad-based carbon tax that applied to nearly all fossil fuels and made it "revenue neutral." Every dollar raised from the tax would be returned to BC residents and businesses in the form of personal income and corporate tax cuts. Campbell was an unlikely proponent of the carbon tax. As the leader of the traditionally conservative BC Liberal Party, he had cut taxes in the past, but now he had reason to believe a revenue neutral carbon tax could be a winner for both the environment and the economy. But with elections just months away and growing public distrust of the tax, combined with a noisy campaign against the tax mounted by the opposition New Democratic Party, the tax's fate, and that of Campbell's political career was far from certain. This case provides an insider's account of how the carbon tax was designed, with the strong role Premier Gordon Campbell played in its creation. It also explores political and other challenges the government faced when designing and implementing the tax.

  • SAP Design Thinking, Part B

Supplement to case SM250B. The SAP Design Thinking case follows the path of Sam Yen, Chief Design Officer at SAP, on his quest to infuse design thinking into the SAP organization. Through a series of programs and events, Yen discovered that while employees of the multinational conglomerate expressed interest in leveraging design thinking in their work, they never seemed to follow through with it. Yen and his design team experimented with a plethora of tactics-ranging from grassroots campaigns meant to engage the employee base, to top-down approaches intended to excite the company's executives, with the hopes that this enthusiasm would trickle down throughout the rest of the organization. On a trail rife with challenges, Yen and his team struggled to continuously develop new approaches until suddenly the metaphorical storm cleared, and he could clearly see a path to scale design thinking throughout SAP.

  • JSW Steel's Ispat Acquisition: The Setback

The three cases (Case A: JSW Steel's Ispat Acquisition: The Opportunity; Case B: JSW Steel's Ispat Acqusition: The Setback & Case C: JSW Steel's Ispat Acquisition: The Turnaround Strategy) describe the business situation leading to acquisition of Ispat by JSW, the acquirer company's failure to realize synergies post-acquisition, and the subsequent turnaround initiatives to salvage the situation. In 2010, JSW Steel, a 14 mtpa Indian steel company acquired Ispat Steel with annual production capacity of 3 mtpa. The acquisition was part of JSW's multipronged strategy to realize its aspiration of being a 40 mtpa firm. At the time of acquisition, Ispat had huge debts, a long pipeline of unfinished projects, high production costs and unpredictable cash flows. Its main plant, Dolvi was shutdown for 45 days. However, the plant also had numerous advantages. It was located near the seashore and was technologically very advanced. Case A describes the events leading to acquisition of Ispat by JSW. It captures the facts, opinions and inferences around the acquisition decision, which were used as inputs in the due diligence process to assess synergies between JSW and Ispat. The case describes the economic, competitive, and industry factors prevailing in 2010 when JSW was thinking of acquiring Ispat.

  • Siam Di Tella and Import Substitution: Contexts and Strategies (B)

SIAM was born in 1910, in Buenos Aires (Argentina), as a manufacturing company of bread making machines or bread mixers. In only a few decades, the company had diversified its production, becoming the largest metallurgical company in South America. During the first fifty years of existence, SIAM learned how to successfully adjust to the changes in the Argentine scenario, shifting from an open and deregulated economy to an increasingly closed and highly-regulated system. However, from the 1960s onwards, SIAM started to experience a series of productive, organizational and financial adversities, until its final crisis in the 1970s. In that sense, the case study (divided into two parts, A and B), offers relevant information to discuss the various decisions the companies made, in light of the opportunities and obstacles encountered, within a series of contexts marked by an overall growing level of regulation, uncertainty and institutional and macro-economic imbalance. Is SIAM's meteoric rise a synthesis of the Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI) period in Latin America, phase in which the State promoted industrialization oriented to the domestic market as a development strategy? Or is this an example of a firm with an extremely ambitious diversification policy and with management problems?
