Encompass: Creating Innovation in Broadcast, Everyday (B)
This is a two-part case series. Case A begins in October 2012, when Encompass Singapore has introduced innovative ways to increase the capacity of its facility to cope with its fierce growth over the past few years in the Pay-tv industry. The company has captured over 50% of the market for outsourced digital playout services in Asia. The sheer speed of growth that Encompass Singapore is experiencing calls for an innovative, solutions-driven approach to almost all aspects of the business. Growth in the media industry is costly and capital intensive. At the same time, the group is facing increased competition. Process innovation has been critical in supporting the growth of the company since 2009, but can that alone continue to fuel double-digit growth? Case B is set in April 2019, when the media industry has shifted gear, and Pay-tv demand is declining. Online television content and Video on Demand services have instead started to see a growing demand in the market and Encompass is forced to adjust its strategy to cope with changing industry and market. Can process innovation continue to support the growth of the company amidst technology disruption and changing trends? What can be Encompass's growth strategy moving forward? -
The Wesfarmers Way (B)
Continuation of Case A, IMD988 A discussion between two hedge fund managers is used to examine the merits of investing in Wesfarmers, an industrial conglomerate, following a transformative acquisition of a retail business called Coles, in 2007. Coles had been underperforming and was open to bids from Private Equity firms. It was a classic turnaround story. The case is brought to life as Wesfarmers has announced a demerger of Coles in 2018, hence it enables a comprehensive evaluation of the acquisition. The operation turnaround of Coles has been spectacular and the share price ten years on has also done well. However, the case stresses the importance of capital discipline in acquisitions and what optically can look like a good result, on closer examination may not really be the case. It also brings into the question of risk versus reward. The case examines the ways in which the success of major acquisitions can be assessed and the methods through which conglomerates can operate successfully. Study of conglomerates is in response to evidence of trends towards business diversification, as a means of delivering growth objectives. -

WinChannel's Digital Gambit to Revitalize Rural China (B)
This case aims to help students understand how digitization is enabling and shaping the transformation of the traditional FMCG industry in China. It introduces Andrew Cui's response to the challenges posed in Case (A)-i.e., how WinChannel could improve the reach and efficiency of the traditional trade channel when online/mobile B2B FMCG platforms were emerging in the market. In May 2015, Cui launched Huixiadan, a mobile-based B2B FMCG ordering platform, connecting a select group of leading FMCG companies and their numerous distributors and wholesalers with potentially millions of mom-and-pop stores in China. Huixiadan has used mobile technologies to develop an inclusive and collaborative business model linking most players in the existing traditional trade channel. However, it faces fierce competition from many online competitors seeking to disrupt the FMCG industry, including Chinese e-commerce giants Alibaba and JD.com. Cui is wondering how competitive and sustainable Huixiadan's business model is and what he should do to withstand the competitive threats even as he tries to exploit opportunities in the traditional FMCG industry in China. -

Leader as Coach: Restoring Employee Motivation and Performance (B)
Kiera, a young, enthusiastic sales rep, was recently promoted to manager of a sales team of five. In her first year on the job, she tackled a major revamp of the company's outdated training materials and organized a regional conference for her area, but neither her boss nor corporate seemed to appreciate the work she had been doing. Without support or guidance from her boss, Kiera was confused. What was she supposed to do? Parts A and B of the case present two different perspectives on coaching. Part A contains a narrative from the point of view of the "coachee," Kiera, who was learning how to work with her boss, ultimately with the assistance of an executive coach. This case focuses on coaching as a tool to enhance self-management and relationship management and to improve personal performance. Part B describes how Kiera started to learn the "coach approach" to managing her team with the continued guidance of her executive coach. She learned to apply the same skills that her coach used with her in Part A to diagnose her team, share feedback, and communicate expectations. She was learning how to listen and ask thoughtful questions, but she also needed to expand her awareness to "other-management" and build her own coaching skills to enhance her team's performance. -

Marlow Construction (B): Robby Gomez
B Case to case UV7765 This case represents an amalgam of commonly reported experiences people have when interacting with others from different social class backgrounds and positions of power. The A case takes the perspective of Dan Marlow, who grew up with access to financial and cultural resources and has built his own construction company. He has just fired Robby Gomez, an otherwise great worker, for chronic lateness, and he wonders why he is having trouble motivating and keeping employees. The B case takes the viewpoint of Gomez, who works hard but has trouble getting to work on time because of practical difficulties like car trouble and obligations to family and others in his community. By comparing the perspectives and experiences of these two protagonists, students learn to see how our own experiences and cultural knowledge can inform our decisions and the employee programs that we design. Because we are not aware of cultural norms that we have not personally experienced, we need to include a diversity of viewpoints in the decision-making and design process in order to design effective systems and have effective interactions across differences. -
