  • Pacific Coffee Balanced Scorecard: Operationalizing Strategies

Since China Resource Enterprise Ltd. (CRE) acquired a majority stake in Pacific Coffee in 2010, the coffee chain had experienced tremendous expansion particularly in mainland China. Yet, Hong Kong remained the core of the business, and Pacific Coffee could not afford to lose its leadership position in its home base. The competitive environment became more intense and Hong Kong coffee consumers became more sophisticated. Jonathan Somerville, the CEO, realized that while he needed to stay involved, and on top of the business in Hong Kong, he no longer had the capacity to be involved on a day-to-day basis. However, he needed to motivate his Hong Kong team and give them direction when implementing strategies. He decided the Balanced Business Scorecard would be an effective tool to link and align the company's strategy to its operations. Two other related cases in this series include: 1. Pacific Coffee: Making the Numbers Count. 2. Pacific Coffee: Long Run Investment Decisions.

  • Pacific Coffee: Long Run Investment Decisions

Pacific Coffee had experienced a major expansion of its network in Hong Kong since CRE took control in 2010. By March 2018, most but not all districts in Hong Kong had Pacific Coffee stores. Yet, with turnover in leases and new potential markets, there continued to be opportunities to expand into new store locations. In March 2018, Pacific Coffee's business development and leasing team found two locations up for rent. One was a ground-floor space at a new building on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), while the other option was a street-level store in Central district. For Pacific Coffee's management, the investment process did not entail just only financial return. Other intangible factors, such as brand building, were essential for the chain's long-term growth strategy. Two other related cases in this series include: 1. Pacific Coffee: Making the Numbers Count. 2. Pacific Coffee Balanced Scorecard: Operationalizing Strategies.

  • Old Spice: Repeating Success in the Face of Competitive Threat

In 2009-2010 Procter & Gamble's Old Spice brand had to respond to two important challenges. First, after a successful rebranding of the Glacial Falls scent into Swagger (see Kellogg Case #5-411-752), Old Spice's core brand team had to determine its next step in advertising. The options being considered included continuing to advertise Swagger, switching to advertising a different scent, advertising the umbrella brand, or placing an emphasis on body wash instead of on deodorant. This decision also involved proposing both the messaging and the media buy for the option selected. Second, in conjunction with this issue, the brand team had to decide whether the messaging of its advertising should respond to competitor Unilever's new advertising for Dove for Men, which would be kicked off in an upcoming Super Bowl spot. Students will step into the shoes of Mauricio O'Connell-one of the assistant brand managers of Old Spice-as he and his team brainstorm how to position the brand for another big success.

  • Designing a Surgical Quality Improvement Project at Eastern State Medical Center

This case considers the challenges, benefits, and costs of hospital participation in a widely recognized surgical quality improvement benchmarking program. The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) issues performance reports twice a year to participating hospitals, creating benchmarks based on data submitted by over 500 hospitals. NSQIP claims that participation reduces surgical complications. The protagonist, the Chief of General Surgery at a large academic medical center, faces skepticism about the value of the report on two fronts: from some surgeons on his staff and from a statistician he consults. Some of the hospital surgeons find the data difficult to interpret, and question their utility in focusing quality improvement interventions. The statistician has reservations about the validity of the statistical results as a basis for action. The chief must decide if and how the NSQIP report can be used to improve quality. In the coming era of value-based purchasing initiatives for hospitals, the chief also needs to be concerned about how payers might interpret this data as they develop payment systems that reflect available measures of surgical quality.

  • SK Planet in 2013: A Korean Giant's Big Bet on the U.S. Market

The case details the strategic decisions that SK Planet, a leader in web and mobile services in its home country of Korea, needed to make regarding the best way to carry out an aggressive global expansion-most importantly into the United States. The $1 billion company had a war chest of $600 million in cash, which allowed company leadership to consider three strategic options for evaluation: 1) Port or rebrand SK Planet's top-ranked Korean services to the U.S. A challenge with this option was that these platforms were developed largely for the Korean market and might not translate to U.S. audiences. Also, many of these services would face entrenched, direct competition within the U.S.; 2) Develop or expand organically, by way of chartering new SK Planet divisions under experienced Korean or American executives. The downside was that this would involve delays in getting new divisions off the ground, and the company needed to invest significant time and energy in researching the U.S. market; 3) Follow a Merger & Acquisitions strategy using its $600 million in cash. However, this would involve a high degree of risk, and if not managed carefully, mergers could lead to culture clashes between U.S. and Korean executives. Whichever option it chose, SK Planet set a three-year goal for its expansion efforts. While nominally short, the company saw this as the critical time frame before the smartphone ecosystem in the U.S. reached maturation and the incumbents fortified their market positions.

  • XiamenAir in 2014: The Dreamliner Decision

In spring 2014, XiamenAir is the most profitable of the five largest airlines in China. With bases in Xiamen, Fuzhou and Hangzhou, its flight network covers major cities in China with international service to Macao, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Southeast Asian countries. The company prides itself on its differentiation strategy: customer service, building a brand and reputation that its customers trust and providing a service for which its customers are willing to pay a premium price even when there are low cost/low price carriers available. Its management is contemplating buying six new Boeing Dreamliner wide-body aircraft that will allow the company to expand its market to Europe, Australia and western North America. Will this purchase enable Fujian Province to more quickly become established as the regional hub for Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and cross-strait transportation? Will it help speed China's push to internationalize its passenger airlines? In the face of growing competition from high-speed rail networks and both Chinese and international airlines, the management must decide how best to grow the company and maintain its profits.

  • Illinois Teachers' Retirement System: Private Equity Performance

This case examines performance assessment in private equity (PE). Its main purpose is to familiarize students with the current guidelines regarding disclosure practices in PE and the performance metrics used to evaluate PE performance. The setting for the case is a $50 million investment in a new $1.3 billion fund (Fund III) being raised by Rhine Capital that is under consideration by the pension trustees of Illinois Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) at an upcoming meetings in January 2013. Students are asked to calculate the Since Inception-Internal Rate of Return (IRR), TVPI, DPI, RVI, and the public market equivalent (PME) for Rhine Capital's Fund II and make a recommendation about the $50 million investment in Fund III. The State of Illinois had been under serious financial pressure for some time, and TRS was $52 billion underfunded relative to its future obligations. To help reduce the shortfall in funding, TRS decided to increase its investments in PE, and it is imperative that those investments earn a satisfactory return. The case discusses the difficulty of measuring performance in PE and the relative merits and shortcomings of frequently used performance metrics.

  • Sum of the Parts Valuation: Digital Realty Trust

Longview Investments, an investor in alternative asset classes, had recently developed a new investment thesis to take advantage of several emerging macroeconomic themes. The strategy was premised on the belief that inflation and interest rates were likely to accelerate in the future and that digital real estate was likely to offer a superior return due to developing trends in technology and IT management. Specifically, the firm noticed greater utilization of cloud-based applications and mobile devices; the increased need for ubiquitous access to digitized data, as well as the explosion in the amount of electronic data generally; and the shifting of firms away from the use of small server closets and toward larger datacenter environments. The net result was a heightened interest in REITs specializing in digital real estate. The case is meant to demonstrate the sum of the parts valuation methodology as a capstone exercise for an introductory finance class in a first-year MBA setting. It follows an investment professional as he develops a hypothesis related to Digital Realty Trust (DLR), a publicly traded REIT specializing in digital real estate.
