Division through-put was poor (35 engines and 190 modules awaiting maintenance), there were 30 F/A-18 aircraft with bare firewalls (no engines), the maintenance crews were working 12-hour days, manning was at 61% of authorized levels, reenlistment rates were an abysmal 50%, and crew morale was lousy. • Best Buy Co., Inc.

In 2007, Best Buy was the leading electronics retailer in the United States with more than 941 stores, revenue totaling $31 billion, and a market cap of $21 billion. In 2005, Best Buy had adopted a new business model, culture, and customer-segmentation template called Customer Centricity. This move created volatility in the price of Best Buy stock because of the higher-than-expected employee costs that went with this new way of doing business and the difficulty of executing the old and the new business models simultaneously while the new model was rolled out. Best Buy responded to Wall Street's short-term focus in a myriad of ways. It first asked for investor patience, and stressed the strong operating results achieved in Best Buy stores operating under the new model. But in June 2007, after the stock dropped again, the CEO knew he had to decide whether to open more Best Buy stores, increase the company's dividend, or increase the stock-repurchase program.

  • Investure, LLC, and Smith College

Alice Handy, an investment professional with 30 years' experience as head of the University of Virginia Investment Management Company, has opened a new asset management firm targeted at midsize endowments and nonprofit institutions in January 2004. Her business, Investure, LLC, offered outsourced investment services to institutions with $150 million to $1 billion in assets and access to top-performing managers at lower cost than a fund of funds (FoF). Smith College, a prestigious liberal arts college with a nearly $1 billion endowment, is interested in increasing its current allocation to private equity. Handy and her partner are preparing to meet with Smith's trustees in an attempt to win Smith College as Investure's first client. The case presents three different approaches to private equity investing: direct investment through a traditional limited partnership, investment through an FoF, or investment through Investure's outsourced model. The class discussion presents an opportunity to evaluate advantages and shortcomings of each approach, introduce key terminology, and discuss the current trends in the private equity market. Students are given the cash inflows and outflows for a representative investment in a venture capital fund of the type Handy hopes to invest in on behalf of Smith College. The main analytical task requires students to evaluate the expected gross and net returns generated by the representative investment under each of the different approaches and fee structures.

  • Flaxo Exports: Managing People in a Small- to Medium-Sized Enterprise

A very successful Indian SME manufactured furnishing textiles and was operating exclusively in the exports sector. The company had no formal human resource (HR) systems and procedures nor did it have an HR manager. The sole proprietor took his only young son, an MBA, as a partner. He had his father's consent to his ambitious plans of business expansion, including manufacturing similar products to cater to the needs of the domestic market, and in this regard wanted to cash in on the Flaxo brand that the company had built over the years in the exports market by strengthening it in the domestic market as well. Narrates the typical business strategy and people-management practices that are followed by SMEs in the Indian context and helps understand managing people in SMEs, including the employee relations situation and the whole structural and procedural dynamics that surrounds these activities. These activities at Flaxo are marked by the practice of paternalism by a caring employer, whose leadership style helps it in getting a competitive edge through a higher degree of employee commitment. Highlights certain indigenous practices of employment and work organization that have become part of the culture of this industry, and focuses on the ways in which the owner gets greater advantage by building on these practices. Raises the dilemma of the new partner (son of the earlier owner) as to whether he should establish formal HR systems and procedures in his attempt to build the Flaxo brand and thus to professionalize people management, or should he continue with the time-tested existing indigenous practices, which are cost-effective and presently working well.

  • AIA-JF Green Fund--Differentiation in Funds Market

The Mandatory Provident Fund ("MPF") was established in December 2000 in Hong Kong to provide a formal, government-supervised retirement protection vehicle for the local population. As a major MPF service provider, AIA-JF made a revolutionary move in launching the first socially responsible investment ("SRI") fund, the Green Fund, in the MPF market. SRI was a relatively new concept in Hong Kong, though it had been growing rapidly in the U.S. and Europe since the mid-1980s. In the first year of its launch, the Green Fund attracted US$5 million, as targeted. However, the company had to quadruple the fund size to US$20 million in three years' time with economically viable marketing approaches. Illustrates the special characteristics of marketing investment products, particularly in target market selection, and allows students the opportunity to recommend marketing strategies targeted at corporate and individual consumers.
