• Go Pure: Transitioning from a Regional to National Brand

Ashish and Ranu Surana, a husband and wife team and co-owners of Go Pure Ice Cream (“Go Pure”), had managed to turn their passion for developing and selling fruit-based ice cream into a successful business. Having crossed the milestone figure of INR 10 million in sales with their network of 20 franchisees, mostly in Tier 2 and 3 cities, they dreamed of taking the Go Pure brand to the national level, which would require them to launch in metro and Tier 1 cities. However, they knew that this was not going to be easy. Managing existing franchisees in terms of their adherence to standard operating procedures was proving a challenge, as some franchisees were neglecting to wear headgear or gloves or not using branded cups. The founders were worried that these small but significant lapses were diluting the brand. Their current franchise model involved charging franchisees a once-off franchisee fee and billing them on an ongoing basis for the products they delivered. The Suranas wanted to identify the correct strategy to make Go Pure a national brand, but were having trouble selecting the right approach.

The first option they considered was trying to get the right franchisees on board. If they could achieve this, those franchisees could act as influencers for them in prime locations in metro and Tier 1 cities, making their brand look fantastic at the national level. The second option they considered was to continue to expand in Tier 2 and 3 cities and to try to become an aspirational brand for the majority of urban and rural Indians. The other option they were looking at was getting an infusion of venture equity and opening professionally managed, company-owned, company-operated outlets in metro and Tier 1 cities. They engaged the services of a brand consultant to help them understand how their brand was perceived and valued in the minds of their target audience and to advise them on how to leverage this information to fulfill their dreams.

  • Amazon North Dakota: Balancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Staffing Needs

This case examines the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring- and retention-related challenges encountered by Amazon.com’s FAR1 location in Fargo, North Dakota, at the end of 2021. John Sabo, FAR1’s general manager and hiring team leader, had one main goal: to hire and train a diverse team of 1,446 Amazonians by the facility’s opening date in December 2021. However, there were many barriers to achieving this goal, including potential candidates’ negative perception of Amazon’s workplace environment due to its negative track record of employee safety and well-being, especially with regard to under-represented groups. To complicate matters, there was a limited supply of qualified, under-represented candidates in Fargo. Could Sabo and his team find a way to meet Amazon’s DEI goals while also ensuring adequate staffing? Were there solutions they had overlooked? Should they develop separate strategies for managers and employees? Further complicating the team’s decision, DEI initiatives were not universally embraced, and there were questions on the efficacy of DEI programs. The success of FAR1 and its potential to serve as a blueprint for future warehouse expansion hung in the balance.

  • Beirut International Model United Nations: Conference-Planning System

On a day in early June 2017, Fadi Kanaan, a member of the organizing committee of the Beirut International Model United Nations (BEYMUN) conference at the American University of Beirut (AUB), sat in front of college hall feeling very excited yet worried. He had just received an email informing him that he would be the secretary-general of the annual Model United Nations conference at AUB in the spring of 2018. BEYMUN invited students from universities worldwide who were interested in addressing global concerns and prevailing world topics in a real-life simulation of the United Nations committee sessions. This conference was the perfect opportunity for participants to tackle such topics as regional conflicts, women and children, human rights, peacemaking, disarmament, economic and social development, and the environment while working in committees for Disarmament and International Security, Economic and Financial, Social Humanitarian and Cultural, and Special Political and Decolonization. But Kanaan was worried how BEYMUN would manage the overwhelming application process. Previously, the BEYMUN team had experienced issues with organizing large events, and Kanaan realized the existing system that received applications was inadequate for processing the hundreds of applications he expected the conference to receive. He knew that within two weeks of announcing the conference dates, applications would start to pour in. Kanaan and the team had to respond to each application before a deadline. Now was the time for BEYMUN to develop a system that would efficiently manage and process the applications to help organize a successful conference.

  • Il Pianoforte: The Sound of Leadership

In February 2007, Diego Papalia, founder and owner of Ottawa Pianos, was getting ready to meet with his daughter, Carmen, to discuss the strategic future of the company. Five years prior, the father–daughter duo had started separate projects within the business. Diego had launched the digital music centre and Carmen had started a piano school, with a plan to reassess which might be the more lucrative endeavour in five years’ time. The DMC sold guitars, amplifiers, drum kits, and various other electronic musical equipment; however, there was a high turnover requirement as music technology was constantly evolving. Carmen’s piano school had grown to over a dozen instructors and 300 students. The downside was that it took up a lot of space— in this case, the entire basement that could otherwise be used for stock storage—and yielded low profit margins. Diego and Carmen had to decide which of the two projects to retain.

Waterdrop had become a leading domestic insurance and health-care service platform in China. However, a potential business risk emerged for Waterdrop Mutual Aid. • Is Japan’s Monetary Policy a Rational Expectations Saga?

In April 2023, Kazuo Ueda became the 32nd governor of the Bank of Japan (BoJ), which had become famous for adopting an ultra-dovish monetary policy. Japan had maintained a zero-interest-rate policy for years in order to achieve growth and take the economy out of deflation. Ueda had to decide whether to raise interest rates after achieving the bank’s inflation target of 2 per cent. This was a crucial decision as the United States and other countries had raised interest rates because of higher inflation levels caused by supply-side disruptions arising from the Russo-Ukrainian War. Japan’s continued low interest rates were causing capital to flow out of the country in search of better returns, generating a further depreciation of the yen and gravely impacting the import costs of basic necessities like food and fuel. Historically, any indication of an interest rate hike in Japan had impacted expectations and sentiment so profoundly that it had led to a freefall in the consumer price index, leading to deflation and eliminating growth prospects. However, with Japan experiencing positive growth rates, inflation above the targeted rate, and a much-anticipated wage hike, it was time to rethink the country’s interest-rate policy.
