Newstar Magazine Exercise: Publisher Role

In the Newstar Magazine exercise, participants are assigned one of three roles—managing editor, publisher, or board chair—and provided with information about personnel difficulties that have emerged at the independent Canadian magazine. The organization is small, financially strapped, and conflict has appeared within the magazine’s leadership. The objective of the exercise is to understand the source of this conflict and ultimately to resolve it. Use with 9B17C050 and 9B17C052.
學習目標
This exercise can be used in undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs. It can be taught in courses on negotiation, human resource management, industrial relations, or managing people. Using this exercise helps students learn concepts in negotiation and mediation. It can also be used to teach skills in managing performance, skillfully appraising performance, and working within the constraints of a collective agreement. The exercise can be used as a case to stimulate class discussion as well as a role-play or negotiation exercise for students to engage in before debriefing the experience in the classroom.
