Apni Shala: Ensuring Psychosocial Wellbeing during Crisis

內容大綱
The social enterprise Apni Shala Foundation (ASF) provided social and emotional learning programs to disadvantaged communities in Mumbai, India. Since its founding in 2013, ASF had engaged with more than 16,000 students. Before February 2020, ASF was directly engaged with more than 4,600 students, 1,000 parents, and more than 500 teachers at 35 government schools and non-profit organizations. However, on March 31, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced ASF to shut its office and discontinue operations, and its mission of equipping children, educators, and parents with skills to support improved mental well-being stopped abruptly. Amrita Nair, the co-founder of ASF now faced a dilemma regarding resuming the foundation’s social and emotional learning programs: If ASF did continue, which categories should it choose to serve, and why? How could it transform its offerings and operations without compromising much on the quality of programs?
學習目標
This case is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students in programs on social entrepreneurship, strategy, non-profit management, and venture planning. The level of difficulty is intermediate. The case discussion will help students understand the challenges businesses face amid a crisis and will provide them with an opportunity to learn the business model canvas (BMC) concept. Students can apply the tool to select target markets, adapt offerings, and suggest revised operations for ASF; in doing so, they will be able to appreciate the significance of BMC for businesses during uneven times. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to do the following:

Describe the challenges social enterprises face under uncertain business environments, and explain how they can adapt their operations and offerings to survive.

Explain the BMC, and apply it to evaluate the strengths and challenges of different strategic options for an organization.

Analyze a social enterprise and apply the BMC to make decisions in rapidly changing business conditions.

Recommend a future course of action for an organization’s survival.
