Advanced Material Technology (AMT), a Japan-based company and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of advanced ceramic products, was considering the prospect of raising 24 billion yen ($200 million) to finance its planned capital expenditure program. AMT must consider a variety of financing sources including straight debt, convertible bonds, and bonds with warrants. Currency denomination and location of a global offering are also considered. The case also examines the economic and banking environment in Japan.

The objectives of this case are to: <ul><li>Evaluate alternative sources of financing including straight bonds, convertible bonds, and bonds with warrants.</li><li>Expose students to the financing alternatives faced by managers outside of North America and reveal how some simple decisions in a North American context, such as getting a bank loan, can be more complex in other cultures.</li><li>Highlight the importance of international markets for security issues and the additional complexity of issuing non-domestic (as well as foreign currency) securities. </ul></li>This case can be used in an introductory course after students have been exposed to capital structure and are familiar with both common shares and bonds. As well, students should have some familiarity with basic properties of call options.
