Professor Pettigrew's Retirement Decision

內容大綱
This case examines retirement and pension-related decisions from a financial perspective, using the example of a university professor, Dr. Carl Pettigrew. Dr. Pettigrew has a comprehensive pension plan through his employer, but needs to take into consideration his obligations to his ex-spouse and his existing life insurance policy. Due to all of the different elements under consideration, the case represents a moderately complex situation for the pension holder. Students are asked to take the role of a financial planner, to help Dr. Pettigrew work through all of the factors he needs to take into account and make the best decision about when and how to retire.
學習目標
This case is intended for senior undergraduate students or MBA students with an interest in personal financial planning including employee benefits, pension plans and insurance. The case represents a comprehensive, real-life example of financial planning with many different practical concepts affecting the decision-making process. Theoretical concepts will focus on provisions of a defined benefit pension plan, commuted value (net present value of future payments), pension regulation, non-forfeiture options available in life insurance and some elements of matrimonial law. The primary goal of the case is to give students foundational understanding in a common financial area that affects virtually every member of the workforce, yet is not generally well understood.
