  • Growing Trafalgar Ales, Meads & Distillery

In February 2018, the co-owners of Trafalgar Ales, Meads & Distillery, based in Oakville, Ontario, were eager to take on a wide range of new opportunities. In the 18 months since their purchase of the brewery, the two co-owners had devoted great efforts to transforming the company, creating and launching several new and successful beer brands. Contract brewing was de-emphasized, and the layout of the brewery was reset. The owners became involved in the industry at the brewers association level. What they needed, it seemed, was a better understanding of the opportunities in front of them. The co-owners had to decide where they should focus their attention and their resources. Their challenge was how to grow the brewery—do more of the same, or launch products in other categories?

  • Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC: Valuing Growth Potential

In 2016, Chinese football club Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao Football Club (Evergrande), which had recently been crowned the most valuable football club in China by Forbes magazine, with a valuation of US$282 million, simultaneously had a market capitalization in China of over US$3.3 billion. The team had yet to earn a profit, so these valuations raised questions regarding how this team in particular was valued and how sports franchises were valued in general. Many sports teams tended to lose money as they built their talent base, and investors often valued such assets in a way that was similar to the valuation of technology stocks. A football fan who was interested in investing in the Evergrande club was concerned about the high price for its shares. He wondered whether the club was really worth this much money and whether its stock price could continue to rise in future. To answer these questions, he needed to understand how the team was valued.

  • Nilgai Foods: Positioning Packaged Coconut Water in India

In June 2017, the two founders of Nilgai Foods Private Limited reintroduced Cocofly—a fresh, healthy, and pure coconut water—at the lowest price point among competing brands. The initial response to the product when it was first introduced in 2016 was overwhelmingly positive. However, the two founders were concerned in 2017 that Cocofly might be unable to sustain its success for the future. Some important questions were worrying the two founders: How could they avoid the commoditization of their product? How would they differentiate Cocofly from its competitors? Was price differentiation a sustainable strategy? What was the right marketing strategy for a market dominated by unorganized competitors and some early entrants? How should they expand their market across India, especially in the coastal cities of the country, where coconut water was readily available through unorganized companies?

  • Yonghui Superstores: Profit-Sharing and Partnership Reform

In July 2018, several employees of Yonghui Superstores stood outside the company’s headquarters in Chongqing, China to protest a pay cut that had been imposed on them. In 2012, the national supermarket chain had rolled out a performance monitoring system that periodically identified employees with inferior results. A broad-range profit-sharing plan was linked to the new performance system and calculated results based on team performance. Yonghui Superstores also applied organizational reforms to support the new system. All measures were intended to stimulate overall performance and increase labour efficiency. After the implementation of these measures, Yonghui Superstores saw favourable financial results and improved performance. Its new policies also helped increase personal income for many of its employees. However, the system also sparked anger among some workers who failed to meet predetermined performance expectations. Incidents such as employee protests had to be avoided because they could tarnish the company’s brand image. From an organizational perspective, the company also had to balance the interests of the various business divisions, which faced completely different competitive environments. Yonghui Superstores needed a systematic solution for its performance initiative.

  • Aviron Interactive Inc.: Bootstrapping a Gamification Fitness Startup

In 2016, Toronto entrepreneur Andy Hoang was working to launch a new business, Aviron Interactive Inc., a developer and marketer of interactive rowing machines that would use gamification to allow users to work out with others through a virtual connection and an innovative, remotely-activated resistance adjustor. Hoang wanted to create the new business by wrapping an outsourced services model around a central core that included the key business insight, key differentiating product and technology features, and the leadership of a founding team. The other elements required of a startup—engineering, product design, product development, software coding, testing, quality assurance, marketing, sales, and so on—would be outsourced to various niche suppliers, and the central core would oversee the governance of the supplier portfolio. Hoang knew the company would be competing with similar video-based rowing machines as well as indoor rowing apps. He had a limited budget and wanted to design, develop, and launch the product quickly, to stay ahead of his competition. Would a traditional business model or a lean, agile model be best for this project?

  • CareerWise Colorado

CareerWise Colorado (CWC) is an organization that equips high school students with the skills to build successful careers through apprenticeships. Founded in 2016, the young organization has attracted interest from different groups and civic leaders from across the U.S., some of whom want to replicate CWC's model, and others who want CWC to bring and then operate its program in their localities. Noel Ginsburg, CWC's founder and CEO, and Ashley Carter, COO, now have to decide how, when, and where to grow CWC. They both believe in CWC's apprenticeship model's widespread applicability, but so far it is still a relatively small-with just over 200 active apprentices spread across two cohorts; all of whom live in Colorado-and unproven entity. As of late 2018, no apprentices had yet completed the three year program. They did not want to scale the program too soon, but Ginsburg and Carter also did not want to miss out on the attractive opportunities being presented to them. How should they scale this organization?

  • Is PlayDate Just a Game? - PAL by Project PlayDate

On June 12, 2018, 29-year old PlayDate founder and CEO Amanda Raposo and advisor Michael Ryan-Southern considered an offer from "celebrity mom" and founder of a fashion brand Daphne Decoates to combine their independent playdate app start-ups and split the equity 50-50. Raposo, had been running PlayDate in various formats since 2010 but Decoates' app was still in the conceptual phase. The decision was urgent, as Raposo had committed to investors that she would launch PlayDate's online application by July 31, in six weeks. Raposo also had internal issues: her lead app developer had been hospitalized the day before, and she needed to finalize the equity split with her co-founder and part-time chief marketing officer, Courtney Bernabei. Lastly, conversations with senior executives in larger parental outsourcing firms brought to light challenges with the complexity and expense of simultaneous vetting of multiple caregivers and multiple families. Raposo considered her best path forward with respect to company ownership, strategic partnerships, and delivering on a compelling, differentiated value proposition. This case asks students to consider the multitude of issues that an entrepreneurial leader must manage as they move towards launching their venture.

  • Tesla Inc.: Strategic Partnerships for Growth

In 2018, California-based Tesla Inc. (Tesla) seemed to be gaining momentum after a series of setbacks in the production of its mass-market Model 3 car. Tesla's partnership strategy, guided by founder and chief executive officer Elon Musk, had been key to its success, yet Tesla did not appear to be succeeding as a stand-alone firm. It continued to command a small portion of overall vehicle sales, it had not mastered mass-production techniques, and it had not solved its sales dilemma by receiving permission to bypass the car dealership network in the United States. Tesla would continue to need partners for growth even as the nature of its partnerships changed. The challenge was to determine Tesla's partnership strategy in the short to medium term.

  • Creating Shared Value at the Mills: A Billion Dollar Experiment in Corporate Social Entrepreneurship

When the Hong Kong billion-dollar revitalization of a set of derelict cotton mills in Hong Kong was first conceptualized by property heiress Vanessa Cheung, the project had a clear direction around which it was to be oriented. The Mills was to be a social institution: a space in which an otherwise poor and fragmented local community could connect with both its past, as a center of textile production, and its future. Financed by Nan Fung Group, Vanessa's multigenerational family business and one of Asia's most valuable property development companies, the Mills was underwritten without the diligence that might proceed projects of a comparable scale. Three years from project inception but still several months away from the facilities opening to the public in late 2018, the Mills struggled to operationalize the three business models it had evolved to encompass, namely, an incubation platform including co-working space; shopping space targeting pop-up stores and smaller retailers; a heritage center to operate as a non-profit museum. Vanessa also wondered how her project will deliver on its original vision of creating shared value for its stakeholders.
