  • What Is a Business Model?

Business Models and Strategic Management: A New Integration is a seven-chapter book published by the Business Expert Press in 2012 and written by Francine Newth, associate professor of strategy at the School of Business at Providence College. The author says that an effective strategy derives from a fundamental understanding of how a company operates, which is defined by its business model. She explains the elements of a business model and how to integrate it with strategic decision making, providing what the she calls a more "real-world" guide to effective management. She provides practical insight for managers and conceptual models grounded in research and current business examples. Each chapter includes discussion guides and a practical exercise based on real-world companies. In Chapter 1, What Is a Business Model? (25 pages), the author explains that a strong business model has both qualitative and quantitative elements. The qualitative base of the model comprises the value proposition, dynamic capabilities and competencies, and financial viability. The quantitative elements of a model's profit formula are revenue sources, cost structure, and profitability. The author offers steps to consider when creating or revising a business model. There are three discussion activities based on Netflix, Wal-Mart, and eBay. There is also an exercise on analyzing a business model matrix from a qualitative and a quantitative perspective.

  • AmTran Technology Ltd.

As an original design manufacturer (ODM) of television sets and leading supplier to Vizio, a market leader in the U.S. for LCD flat panel TVs, AmTran Technology Ltd. uses what founder Alpha Wu describes as a "WE" model in which western companies perform sales, marketing, and product definition work, while eastern companies in Asia like his perform the engineering and manufacturing work. Confronted with commoditization pressure, Wu is presented with the opportunity to license a major TV brand. Is this consistent with his model? The case explores the changes that have taken place in the consumer television receiver market and the challenges faced by leaders of the analog market like Sony. It is intended for use with the technical note, "Competency-destroying Technology Transitions: Why the Transition to Digital is Particularly Challenging," HBS No. 613-024.

  • Seacoast Science Center: Sailing the Shoals

Wendy Lull, President of the non-profit Seacoast Science Center (SSC), was considering a substantial increase in the admission fee for the SSC facility in early 2008. The SSC's mission, "To create connections to nature through personal experience," was carried out through educational programs and exhibits targeting all ages. A number of new exhibits brought the flora and fauna of the seacoast of New Hampshire vividly to life, and illustrated many aspects of humans' interactions with the sea. Lull reviewed the changes since the SSC had become independent in 2001. There had been two major expansions, the most recent being an interactive learning studio that had opened in November 2007. She felt that the fee increase would help to cover a persistent $50,000 deficit in operating income. However, a fee increase might reduce visitation, which was already growing slowly, at best. A more fundamental strategic question might be whether the SSC should seek to grow, and if so, how.

  • Surviving Disruption

In this article Wessel and Christensen, both of Harvard Business School, introduce a way to work out how dangerous a disruption may be to your business. With a deep understanding of the jobs your company really does for customers and a clear take on both the advantages the disrupters have and the barriers they face, you can predict whether, to what extent, and how quickly an approaching disruption might displace your business model. Then you can take steps to maximize your core's strengths in response. The authors offer as an example the disruption of retail grocery stores. Although only about 1% of all groceries in the U.S. are currently bought online, the theory of disruption suggests that e-grocers will speed their delivery times, increase their product selection, and add features we can hardly imagine today in pursuit of new customers and higher profit margins. Nevertheless, of the three main jobs for which customers use retail grocers--stock up on nonperishables, shop for tonight's dinner, and grab an emergency item--only the first is vulnerable right now to the disrupters' extendable core: its ability to maintain radically lower prices as it creeps upmarket in search of more customers. That means traditional grocers need to focus on developing innovations to strengthen their hold on the other two.

  • Kiva the Disrupter

When Mick Mountz set out to build Kiva Systems, he knew he was attempting to disrupt long-standing incumbents in the material-handling industry--and he succeeded. There is no question that the company's armies of mobile robots upend the normal pick-and-pack process in an online retailer's warehouse. But Mountz explains that it wasn't enough to envision the novel approach, invent the required technology, and make it commercially viable--he had to do much more to help customers take on the risk of buying an unprecedented solution. He had to price it in a way that made his company, not the customer, bear the risk. He had to provide all components of the solution so that Kiva would be 100% responsible for its performance. And he had to design his organization to deliver the entire customer experience--from initial marketing contact to after-sales service. It all adds up to a daunting proposition for a new company--and begins to show why disruption is so hard to pull off. When a company must defy so many of its industry's norms to change the game, it's out there to sink or swim on its own.

  • ASUSTeK and the Google Nexus 7 Tablet

Days after Jerry Shen introduced a new tablet computer at the Consumer Electronics Show, a Google meeting convinced him to go with a lower price point and co-branding as the Nexus 7. While his company would have a premier position at launch, companies like Samsung posed a large competitive threat. He also knew he would sell more of the Android-powered tablets at the lower price, but how would he make money? The case explores the challenges of innovating in the Android value network in which firms specialized in only one part of the value chain, yet collectively they had to compete with a more vertically integrated Apple and its iPad. The case is intended to be part of a discussion on modularity and industry structure.

  • Performance Through Time

Building Strategy and Performance Through Time is an eight-chapter book written by Kim Warren, professor of Strategic Management in MBA and Executive programs at London Business School, and published by Business Expert Press in May of 2009. Written for both students of and professionals in strategic management, the text sets an agenda for building business strategies in powerful, actionable, and accessible terms. It provides frameworks for understanding why a business's performance is moving on its current path, where it will go if the strategy remains unchanged, and how to design a robust strategy to transform this future. The author begins by examining the movement of performance and strategy over time, as strategic challenges evolve and resources, both tangible (staff, cash, and customers) and intangible (reputation and investor support), develop or decline. He then identifies the problems and shortcomings associated with existing strategic analysis tools, including SWOT and industry analyses. Finally, he provides an overview of practical techniques for developing a time-based picture of the challenges that organizations face.
