  • "Storrowed": A Generative AI Exercise

"Storrowed" is an exercise to help participants raise their capacity and curiosity for generative AI. It focuses on generative AI for problem understanding and ideation, but can be adapted for use more broadly. Participants use generative AI tools to understand a problem and then to arrive at ideas for solving it. The exercise begins with the following introduction: "A problem vexed Boston, Massachusetts, and its drivers. Trucks got stuck under the bridges on the city's Storrow Drive so often that this predicament even had a name, 'Storrowing' or getting 'Storrowed'. Efforts to date, including signage, social media campaigns, and fines, among other measures, had not put an end to Storrowing. One driver - dismayed and delayed on the way to work behind one such run-in - wondered, 'What would AI have to say about why this keeps happening?'" The exercise is accompanied by a game and can be run in teams; the best prompts keep the teams' trucks from "Storrowing."

  • Merced Property and Casualty Company: How Climate Risk Led to Its Failure

Facilitated by hot Diablo winds, dry weather, and combustible vegetation, the Camp Fire in November 2018 almost destroyed the town of Paradise in Butte County, California. The fire also led to the demise of Merced Property and Casualty Company (Merced), a small property and casualty insurer based in Atwater, California. Following the Camp Fire, homeowners' insurance claims exceeded Merced's ability to pay out their insurance claims, and in December 2018, Merced was put into liquidation by the California Insurance Guarantee Association. In September 2021, Jessy Picado, chief executive officer of Insuredhouse, a small property and casualty insurer in Alberta, Canada, decided to scrutinize the case of Merced in a bid to restructure Insuredhouse's climate risk management plan. Picado appointed Dany Voisin, chief risk officer, to identify the reasons for the downfall of Merced and draw lessons from it. Voisin had to determine what available information and financial ratios would have been indicators of Merced's business vulnerability and use them in his analysis before making recommendations to Insuredhouse.

  • To Plot or Not to Plot: An Exercise on Understanding and Comparing Datasets

As managers face a flood of data, it is very important that they effectively analyze and interpret the available data to make decisions. Plotting data will help them in their analysis and interpretation of raw data. The same is true for students in business programs. However, students in business programs (and managers) often do not see the importance of plotting data. This case presents a typical classroom scenario in which the professor of data visualization quotes statistician John W. Tukey to his students and tries to drive home the importance of plotting data. A representative student understands about presenting summary statistics and running some statistical tests, but questions the usefulness of plotting points as well. The professor must decide how to teach the class about the merits of plotting data. The professor gives the student an assignment with data and instructions, and tells the student to report the class the next day. The student is unaware that he has been given the Anscombe quartet, and he becomes convinced of the benefits of plotting data.

  • Seed Stage Fund: Dispute in Venture Capital (A) - Emma Walker

The negotiation is also underscored by an atypical yet critical ethical conundrum, offering a rich context for exploring the interplay between ethical considerations and business decision-making. These scenarios compel negotiators to engage deeply with the ethical dimensions of their strategies, assessing not only the limits of their own moral flexibility but also the veracity of their adversary’s claims.

  • HPCL: Retail Network Expansion for Navigating Energy Transition

The chief general manager (Retail) at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) was reviewing the sites that had been shortlisted for network expansion. The company needed to select three sites out of six on the short list where it could expand its retail operations. Traditionally, the sales potential for HPCL's main products-motor spirit and high-speed diesel-was an overarching factor for site selection. However, the company had to also now take into account the strategic requirement to expand the current retail fuel network while considering the energy transition as well as other growth avenues. As such, the network expansion strategy and site selection process had to be in alignment with the aspirational targets set by the company. For selecting the most suitable sites, a set of criteria was identified that aligned with HPCL's targets. However, no single shortlisted site provided the maximum benefit across all criteria, so selecting the right sites for expansion would be a difficult task.

  • Universal Indane: Managing Inventory Flows and Beyond

Yasir Qureshi, the proprietor of the Indian cooking gas agency Universal Indane (UI), has asked the company’s operations manager, Shruti Bhargava, to review the financial statement for fiscal year 2021–22 and prepare a report on the functioning of the various divisions. Although both the manager of human resources and the marketing manager had presented their reports, Qureshi wanted Bhargava to holistically audit the current inventory system at UI in terms of customer satisfaction levels and cost perspectives. Qureshi wanted Bhargava to prepare a report based on the representative data available from the company’s headquarters in Jahangirabad. UI’s inventory turnover ratio was reportedly improving, but the increasing inventory costs, year-on-year, seemed to suggest that new standard inventory practices needed to be adopted. The total operational cost for holding the inventory was calculated based on all relevant cost elements, including ordering cost, inventory holding cost, cost of delivery, and material costs. Standard inventory management principles from operations management literature were used for investigating inventory systems in natural business settings.
