The exercise has been designed to be used midway in a negotiations course as an introduction to strategy selection. It can also be used toward the end of a strategy course as a capstone exercise that enables students to select a strategy and then implement it through persuasion, influence and negotiation; in an industrial relations course as a collective bargaining simulation that enables students to experience the challenges of interest representation, intra-organizational bargaining and negotiating an agreement that is both satisfactory to a given constituency and subject to ratification; or in an organizational behaviour course to illustrate how different organizational stakeholders can observe the same set of events and outcomes yet hold different perceptions and interpretations depending on their viewpoint. Not only are both parties required to negotiate an outcome but each team also needs to choose a strategy that enables it to secure an agreement that meets its respective interests. The exercise provides students with an opportunity to use the negotiation process as a way to improve a previously strained relationship. It also enables students to experience the challenges of interest representation, intra-organizational bargaining and negotiating a collective agreement that is satisfactory to a given constituency and subject to ratification.
