Fauzia Kehar was a woman working in the male-dominated legal profession in Pakistan. She had overcome many barriers to achieve outstanding career success in Pakistan—a male-dominated environment with conservative laws and culture. Her impressive educational background and work experience led to her rapid progression to the role of head of Legal, Gulf Cluster, at Citibank NA in Dubai. After more than 20 years working as a lawyer, Fauzia had reached the top of her profession. In May 2018, she was reflecting back on the sacrifices she had made, and although she was confident she had made the right career choices, she wondered what was next. Should she continue her career in law or utilize her skill set to pursue a new career?

This case is suitable for use in undergraduate or graduate-level courses on career development, human resource management, or leadership with topics on female leaders. It adds a global dimension to class discussion by considering women’s career development in Pakistan, a developing country with a conservative culture. Working through the case will give students the opportunity to do the following:<ul><li>Consider the qualities necessary for achieving a successful career, and analyze the possible strategies and tactics for women to achieve outstanding career success.</li><li>Analyze the gender-related pressures affecting women’s career development.</li><li>Identify the challenges of making a career transition; of being part of a minority and working with people different than oneself; and of working with leaders and clients who present difficult behavioural styles and/or personality traits.</li><li>Define success, and acknowledge that this definition may differ throughout one’s career.</li></ul>
