The co-founder of a geological consulting start-up was taking an unconventional approach to employee motivation by using non-salary enticements (e.g. retreats) as tools to drive employees' engagement with the company. The approach ran contrary to not only long-standing human resources practices but also to the preferences of the company's own employees. But that approach had only been tested in a small setting so far. Would it work as the company scaled up in size to become a larger organization?

The case can be used in an undergraduate or graduate-level course on organizational behaviour or human resources management. It serves well as an introduction to motivation, its relationship with incentives, and its relationship with performance and growth in fast-changing industries and companies. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will be able to<ul><li>identify the role of different types of incentives in motivating employees, as well as their interactive effects, and</li><li>highlight some emerging practices around employee retention and employee engagement.</li></ul>
