Job Design Exercise: Good Authority

For this exercise, students are asked to assume the place of the two founders and owners of a web-based company called Good Authority. The venture was launched one year earlier and has been successful, although the two owners are finding it difficult to continue operating the company during their spare time while working full-time hours at their day jobs. Recently, an investor offered to fund the salary and payroll expenses for one employee, allowing the two owners more time to grow and expand the business. The students are tasked with effectively designing a job for the new employee to allow the two owners time and energy to focus on the future and success of the business.

This exercise is suitable for courses or modules on job design, human resources, and organizational behaviour at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students can improve their understanding of the process of designing a job to serve the organization and ensure employee satisfaction. After completion of this exercise, students will be able to<br><br><ul><li>assess the accuracy of prepared job data;</li><li>examine the impact to the manager’s workload from the hiring of a new employee;</li><li>design a job for a particular organization;</li><li>contrast the importance of various job tasks;</li><li>weigh the value and risks of assigning tasks to a junior employee;</li><li>explore the potential results of designing a job that consists of undesirable tasks; and</li><li>apply the Job Characteristics Model to the job design process.</li></ul>
