Green Mills Inc. operates several lumber mills throughout the Northwestern United States that produce a variety of wood products. The company is currently considering expanding operations to Chile as a vehicle for reducing the costs of raw materials. In that regard, the management team is interested in analyzing the cost implications as a vehicle to properly assess this backward integration strategy. More specifically, management wishes to evaluate several different aggregate planning policies including level, chase and mixed policies.

The case learning objectives are fourfold:<ul><li> <br>To understand the basic steps of aggregate planning.</li><li>To use Microsoft Excel to develop an aggregate planning analysis. </li><li>To appreciate the differences between level, chase and mixed policies. </li><li>To conduct sensitivity analysis on key model constants.</ul></li><br>This case can be used in a graduate-level core decision sciences or operations management course. It is designed primarily as an out-of-class exercise with a write-up analysis and results being submitted via an e-mail attachment (WORD or PDF file). This case can also be presented in the form of a one-hour team in-class PowerPoint or Prezi presentation. The time to complete the analysis is estimated at four to six hours using Excel.
